Latest research from Emissions Analitics have discovered that tailpipes are now so clean for pollutants that if you were starting out afresh you wouldnt even bother regulating them.
But tyre pollution especially from the heavier hybrid and electric cars is 1850 times more than the average emitted by exhausts.
Particles from tyres contain carcinogen s and 11 % are ultafine .
But EVs won't increase the problem of particulates from tyres. Even tyres that are optimised for EVs, are pretty similar to conventional tyres. And if EVs are slightly heavier than i.c. cars, then that's only by a small amount. For example the lightest version of the Tesla Model 3 is a bit heavier than the lightest BMW 3 Series - but the heaviest Model 3 is lighter than the heaviest 3 Series.
A huge proportion of motorists already drive petrol or diesel cars that are bigger and heavier than what they really need, so the I don't see the weight 'penalty'of EVs being much of an issue.
