Value of service history in older mundane car - Random

Wondering how much difference service history, or indeed lack of it impacts the value of a mundane but fairly rare car. I've come across a 1998 Fiat Bravo 1.4, one owner from new, 42,000 genuine miles. Sadly the deceased owner lost the service history. I've been told the vendor is after about £1200 for it. Bar some rust on a rear wheel arch it's pretty well immaculate.

The car interets me, always liked them, not many about, but should I be bothered about lac of history? And how much in ££ does it impact the value. MOT history is very good, its clearly been looked after.

Cheers!

Have you had a look underneath? The car is 24 years old only worth what you want to pay for it

The last tester to do the car's MoT will (should) have looked underneath, reporting any serious corrosion.

At that age, I imagine it makes very little difference. The car is already worth zero to 99% of people.

Have a very good look at it, including underneath. Have a look at the MOT history to see if that flags up any warnings re corrosion. Fairly simple cars mechanically, so not too much to worry about, esp if you are handy with the spanners yourself. I wouldn't be too concerned about the service history if the car looks like it has been looked after and drives right.

These were pretty well protected against rust when new, so the rust on the rear arch could point to accident damage. This could be minor though, but obviously it will need dealt with to prevent it spreading.

The asking price seems pretty reasonable if the condition is as good as you say (bar the arch). So if you like it, go for it, it isn't that much money to lose should it all go pear shaped!.

Good looking cars.

I’d be more worried if it’s only got one key . Can’t see it being worth £1200 . I’d have a punt at nearer £600 .

Of course, I was forgetting about that key on Fiat's!.

Didn't they come with three?, one of which was a different colour and it was like a master key, which if you lost would cost a small fortune to replace!.

Yep, that’s the one . Essential to have the red master key , otherwise getting another key without it was a right pita .

Assuming the set up is the same as the Punto of similar vintage, there's a way around it.

On the Punto the chip in the key is read by a ring located on the steering lock barrel. The ring has a thin wire long enough to let you relocate it up behind the dash and attach the chipped key to it with a cable tie or tape. Before doing so, get a couple of non chipped keys cut. When you use the new key in the ignition, the car thinks it's the chipped key. Insurance company may not approve, but how would they know.

I suspect the seller thinks that in the current market they can ask for silly prices.

You’ve only got £1200 to lose at tops. Assume it has 12 months MOT?- then offer £950 and see what seller says.
If seller says “no”- you’ve saved £950

It isn't a "mundane " car. Its a 1998 car.

That makes it rare, plus inherently superior to...oh lets say 99% of the other stuff out there.

Less is 99% more. And 99% of punters are 99% i****.

(Well, they are in Taiwan, anyway)

What's the MOT history looking like? That can be a good indicator as to care taken.

Older cars are now becoming more desirable, hence the price tag. But for that price I would expect the history to be there.

Only other thing to be wary of is how the government plans to proceed with forcing us older car owners off the road because we're evil polluters and planet killers.

In a car of this age, the service history would be immaterial. Far more important is the extent of corrosion, which in a 24yr old Fiat I would have thought would be fairly extensive, even if garaged. Get underneath with a powerful torch and screw driver and have a poke around.

Yes, have a good poke around underneath. My 2001 Pug 206 looked great, until you squeezed the main box section which just crumbled. The underseal was doing a great job of holding the rust in.

Another car succumbed to the 'corrosionvirus'!

That's true, John, but a decent history is definitely not immaterial if it proves the car has been properly maintained. The history for my 28-year-old Pug 306 is missing before 2006 but complete from then on, and as it was with the original owner for 20 years I am pretty certain it had FSH from the Pug dealer that sold it.

If the OP particularly wants a Bravo of this age he may well pay the asking price - he isn't looking for a banger, which could well be worth very little.
