Stop-start hasn't worked for months. Not driven much during lockdown and been sitting a lot in the cold weather. Took it for a battery check yesterday (No problem with it), and a good run today, but no joy. Can anyone advise? Thanks

How was the battery tested ? A modern battery needs to be analysed with equipment that performs a conductance test .

Hey, I don't really know, my garage guy attached a meter to the battery, and it showed my battery to be only very slightly down, and he said that a good run (which it had today) should do the trick. Is that the sort of test you mean, i'm not great on car technology. Regards.

Stop-start doesn't work unless certain parameters are met, the state of the battery's charge being only one. If outside temperatures are low, if the air-con is on, or any demanding electrical equipment is operating, etc., etc., the stop-start will not operate.

It’s important to test a s/start battery correctly. I doubt if the machine the garage used will give an accurate result . Taking the car for a long drive will not charge the battery adequately.

How on earth do you charge your battery if not driving the car, I thought that was the alternators job.

To the OP you have managed for months without SS suggest you carry on and save yourself the expense of an expensive new battery. Stop start is just another useless added expense that causes unnecessary problems just like you have. First thing I do is switch it off!

I would echo FP comments re the parameters. When my Civic was only 18 months old the S/S decided to stop working in November and came back to life in March when I was on the way to the dealer for a service where I had asked them to check it out. They checked it out anyway and said there was no fault. The same winter huff continued all the while I had it. Too much drain from ancillaries in winter to meet the percentage full charge parameter.

Even after a new battery at six years old gave the same result that winter.

On the other hand my current Golf is two years old and both winters I have had it, the S/S has worked flawlessly, lockdown mileage included. It will not operate occasionally but that is due to the usual transient conditions, such as needing to protect the turbo or allowing the aircon to operate.

in both cars I have tended to switch it off but when in use the Golf system feels more mechanically sympathetic than the Civic one.
