The Ratner situation doesn't seem to apply to car purchases. For example, people still buy VWs and Audis despite their below average reliability records, the eventual grudging admission of driveability problems with the new 1.5 engine, systematic emissions cheating etc.

Ratner rubbished his company's products, whereas Musk is admitting to known issues. What should he do - take the public stance that Rolls-Royce (of old) used to take of never acknowledging any fauts?

I may be old-fashioned, but if there are obvious faults with the bits that you can see (bad paint jobs and uneven panel gaps) I wouldn't be confident about the bits that you can't.
