Ford Escort - Worth buying-silicone wiper blades? - Alfred Rees-Glinos

It seems that every three years or so, I need to buy new wiper blades. A number of reviewers are recommending silicone wiper blades, claiming that they can last anything up to ten years. Does anyone have experience of silicone wiper blades? It is worth paying the premium for them, or is there a model of rubber wiper blade that people would recommend for longevity instead? Many thanks. Alfie.

I change front wipers every 10,000 miles, the rear wiper at 15,000 - I use Bosch Aeroblade - I'm interested in good visibility, not long life.

Absolutely....visibility is what counts....for what they cost I'd replace them every 6 months if I needed to.

Wiper blades aren’t that expensive, is it really an issue having to spend £20-30 every 3 years?. Surely the battle to prevent rust is going to be much more pressing on an old Ford, not to mention expensive!.

As for silicon wiper blades?. No idea, I’m unaware of their existence as I’ve never considered the lifespan of conventional wiper blades an issue. I buy Bosch Aerotwin’s for my van and the car, no complaints.

Another one of those miracle products we don’t need . Stick with regular branded makes .

I don't remember ever changing wiper blades on my last Escort-they always wiped perfectly-I only kept it thirteen years.I only ever change blades when they don't wipe satisfactorily-not to a schedule!

I have to every 9-10k as they don`t clear the screens properly and have always used Bosch, though I do live in Town near London and the air is filthy, if these Silicon wiper blades are better may change to them, though so far not heard of anyone who buys them let alone use them.

Annually for me.
Valeo is my preference.

Silicon blades would likely cause a lot of scratching - remember that's what they make those magic chips from. You probably mean silicone-rubber blades, which will repel water and probably glide across a screen more easily, saving wear on the motor.

Mixed reviews from what I'm reading. If you're a motorway warrior, they apparently promote water beading which will then follow the airflow up the screen and away.
Otherwise, they can cause smearing.

Rain-X treated windscreens clear themselves at speeds of about 45 mph and above, motorway warriors should save wiper wear by using it. (I've used it for years, it also clears side windows and back window.)

Bosch for me too, there a safety critical item as far as Im concerned.

I'm just waiting for "others" to jump in and relate the story of how there wipers are a years old and have never felt the need to replace them.....

Look round car parks, often see wipers split and hanging or no blade at all, no surprise some cannot see as the windscreen never clears,(of anything)

I made the mistake a few years ago of using Rain-X screenwash and regretted it for the next two years. Awful stuff that smeared constantly despite attacking the screen and blades with everything short of a flame thrower to remove it.
I’ll stick to keeping it clean, with an occasional treatment with 0000 grade steel wool.

I guess Rain-X contains silicone. So do some Autoglym products such as Bumper Care, which users are advised to keep off glass areas.

Rain-X comes in two versions - the original is applied to the windscreen like polish, works very well - the other is added to the screenwash and can contaminate the level sensor if fitted - avoid it on VW Group vehicles and some others.

That does go towards explaining some of the critical stuff I’ve read about Rain-X. I’ve only ever used it once, put it on all the windows of the VW Polo saloon(!) I had at the time. I found it very effective, basically meant I didn’t have to use the wipers when driving in the rain. No smearing, the only thing was that it didn’t last very long on the windscreen.

Not really sure why I never used it again, I do remember thinking about it a few times but just never got round to it. But this was stuff which was wiped on to the glass and not added to the screenwash.
