I doubt that Dom is a back-roomer, but just in case: if you did 'stop for petrol' on the way back to London from Barnard Castle in your 69-plate silver Disco Sport, you might want to check if your insurance covers misfuelling. Because it's a diesel.

Right, my vision's a bit fuzzy so I'm just off to drive for 90 minutes or so to make sure I'm OK.

Land Rover Discovery Sport - Dominic Cummings' 'stop for petrol' on way home - RT

I've run diesels for nearly 10 years and while I usually refer to "getting some fuel" I do occasionally say "getting some petrol".

Land Rover Discovery Sport - Dominic Cummings' 'stop for petrol' on way home - Sulphur Man

Moreover, does a Disco Sport do 260miles on a tank without stopping, and with a 4 yr old in the back.

If the journey was partly on a flatbed, it would be more believable

Land Rover Discovery Sport - Dominic Cummings' 'stop for petrol' on way home - Metropolis.
My old td5 Discovery could go 600 miles between fill ups with its 21 gallon fuel tank. Sulphur man seems to be getting a bit carried away on the Land Rover bashing, I was just pleased to see a politician buying British! Never did forgive Diana turning up in an Audi.

Your Disco TD5 is a different kettle of fish altogether than a current Disco Sport. The TD5 engine was and is a paragon of dependablity.

In the 2019 What Car reliability survey, the Disco Sport comes 3rd from bottom (out of 23 contenders in its category) with only the Ford Edge and Nissan X-Trail below it. 43% of owners experienced reliability issues compared with 3% of Toyota RAV-4 owners.

So Sulpher Man is perhaps not that far away from reality?.

Land Rover Discovery Sport - Dominic Cummings' 'stop for petrol' on way home - Sulphur Man

If we're talking reality, JLR is a subsidiary of Indian automotive company Tata motors, and are manufactured worldwide. No one can describe a JLR purchase as 'buying British', in the same way no one can describe buying a Mini as 'British'.

JLR are in dire straits right now...they were on the ropes pre-COVID, but are now seeking an emergency bailout of £1bn+. Or rather Tata is seeking an emergency bailout of £1bn+ from the UK Government for their worldwide luxury brand Jaguar Land Rover.

I'll leave that there...

Did I hear correctly that he went for a drive to see if his eye sight was up to the drive home?

My lack of education means that I am not bright enough to think the best way to assess my eyesight would be to go for a drive, presumably if he crashed into some thing or some one that would be the best way to make this assessment.

Luckily there is a castle about 15 miles from where I live so the slightest hint of a migraine I shall set off for a drive and see what happens. I would have thought this was dangerous and in breach of my insurance.

Whatever side of the political fence Cummings is on, any senior adviser that did this when at the same time (Easter Weekend) the Govt were begging people to stay home should be sacked - even if the law / regulations were not broken the spirit of them sorely were and people were fined by the police for doing very similar.

There was one poor bloke in Manchester arrested for delivering food to his parents.

I do wonder about what hold Cummings has over Johnson though. Cummings' wife is the editor of the Spectator and there are rumours that Johnson asked her out at one point.

I'm so fed up with the media lynch mob. Ffs leave his family alone. Hypocritical feckwit journos crowding together (no masks) outside his home. its just enough.

The buying fuel isn't the issue, its the 200+ mile trip then the jolly to Barnards Castle when everyone else was told to stay home - and to be fair, threatened with arrest or fines if they didn't.

Regardless of political persuasion - if he was left wing or right wing my views would be the same - the bloke took the michael big time.

The vitriol of some of the media over this incident is shocking, especially the Guardian/Observer.

Noticeable how many of those shouting the loudest and moralising are also attacking Cummings for being pro brexit as if that’s got anything to do with his actions or why he should be sacked.

The Media have turned from journalists to activists, sky news in particular has turned very sour and biased.
Land Rover Discovery Sport - Dominic Cummings' 'stop for petrol' on way home - Zippy123

Did not break the rules.

I thought the trip to Barnards Castle was prohibited - there was no reason for it and I don't believe the eyesight excuse - I trip round the local roads would have proved if he could see or not and if he or his wife were suspected of being ill with CV19 the guidance was clear: STAY AT HOME. This was Easter - when we were told to stay home at all costs.

At work we have to prove to be a fit person. If we are not we can be sacked. Being unfit can be general actions and not may not involve breaking any laws. I think by his actions he has proved what sort of person he is.

I do wonder if he is the sort of person to have the lights on in an air-raid black out because of some excuse, condemning others to death.

Agreed. It’s being investigated. Let the law take its course. Speaking to a legal friend, he sees the Barnard Castle trip as grounds to prosecute for a breach of lockdown rules.

Now....that Disco Sport 260-mile range thing. Utter make believe!
Land Rover Discovery Sport - Dominic Cummings' 'stop for petrol' on way home - thunderbird

During the lock down people have been fined for breaking the rules, these very same rules that Cummings was involved in writing.

Since its clear that the "unnecessary" trip to Barnard Castle was a breach of the rules he should obviously be fined for that but because of his involvement with the PM it must go further.

The sordid attempts over the past couple of days to clear him of wrong doing have done nothing for the situation. Other government officials have had to resign for misjudgement during lock down, so should Cummings.

Cummings did nothing wrong except look after his family WITHIN the lockdown rules' exceptions, with reasonable common sense for the care of vulnerable people.

Off how none of the papers or those like you on the Left have anything to say about Irish PM Leo Varadkar who actually broke a specific rule of the Irish lockdown by attending a picnic and was photographed doing so (and nearer than the min distance as well).

No hypocrisy there then.

And you wonder why I and others call you guys out when you go Orange/Boris Man Bad on a daily basis over on the other thread.

No - I was merley pointing out the hypocrisy of the Left/media putting ALL their vitriol and effort into ridding us of one person who, contrary to reports, DID NOT break the law and was acting in the best interests of his child and family, as opposed to the leader of a nearby country who publicly broke a specific law he brought in and has not had the media hounding him and his family ever since - and, might I add none of them social distancing.

Don't you think that the media should be fair to all parties, rather than go after one because they hate him because of Brexit, that he played a big part in winning in the last General Election and the lobby hacks are peed off that they aren't getting 'all access' like little spoilt children. No, nothing sinister there, trying to whip up public hatred with blatant lies, stretching of the truth and harrassing a family out of spite.

Meanwhile: Varadkar - nuffin' to see here, move along, move along...

I don't 'hate' the Left - I find their actions and of the self-serving media despicable during a time of national crisis. That you want to play party politics (The PM and government cannot be accused of doing so during the crisis, can they?) and join in with the media in an effective drumhead trial by media for, at most, a minor error (far less than Stephen Kinnock MP [promoted by Starmer], the Muslim Labour MP [no action] or Prof Fergusson) rather says a lot.

Just remember the old addage, "Those who live in glass houses whould not throw stones". Nobody is whiter than white, are they?

It's frankly nonsense on stilts to portray the whole of the media as left and to bring Brexit into the pursuit of Cummings as you seek to do. Most of the press except for Guardian and Mirror were in the Vanguard of the leave campaign. The fact that the Mail has turned on Cummings speaks volumes. There's also a very significant cohort on the government back benches and amongst Junior and even Cabinet Ministers who would gladly see the back of Cummings.

Its far from clear cut that he DID NOT break the law. He might be able to show that he had legitimate excuse for fleeing to Durham but it's not clear bit about danger to children covers his case. Legal bloggers are fairly united in saying that is for life/death situations, particularly where Domestic Violence is in the mix. The c*ck and bull story about Barnard Castle is without doubt a breach of the relevant regulations. If he knowingly drove with suspect vision there's another aspect Durham's finest might need to attend to.

Social distancing when at work is not mandatory; it is more on lines of 'where practicable'.

As I've already said trying to bring a foreign leader, Varadker, into this is whataboutery. In fact it's Whataboutery suma cum laude as they used to say for outstanding performances on the sports field at school. Similarly with Kinnock.

As I've pointed out before Naz Shah (if that's the Muslim MP you mean) was demoted by the party. No action against Prof Ferguson as it was his lady friend who broke the rules; the assumed intercourse was at his gaff.

Bromp - at the risk of drifting off topic, I would disagree. I have neither the time nor the interest to follow more than my daily read (the Times, especially the Comment section) but IIRC most of the opinion then was in favour of Remaining, with just one or two regular contributors rooting to Leave.

But to return to Cummings, at the moment I am imagining that BJ will dig in his heels as long as he can, before finally conceding that the game is up, and much of the public will not tolerate the arrogance of believing that when one has issued a directive to follow certain behaviour, it really only applies to the serfs, not the ruling class.

Presumably in this instance it is Mr Short C who is in the metaphorical glass house.

As one who by inclination occupies the political centre ground (ruefully accepting that elections are habitually won by one extreme or the other) I can't be bothered to waste any more ammo sniping in these discussions. I wonder if it is all really only a wind-up.

More excellent accuracy. For your info Keir Starmer did not become leader until 04 April.

But why should we expect you to be accurate now after all the other total nonsense you have posted on any topic where you believe only your far right views should be allowed.

Play the ball, not the man, chaps.

Surely this time the ball and chap are the same thing, its Cummings.

Apples/Oranges. The point Starmer was making was about mistakes; people who have got something wrong my accident or misjudgement - and by inference no serious consequence ensued.

What's here is a different kettle of fish. Even just by going to Durham Cummings pushed the envelope. It's not what the letter or spirit of the rules said and I don't think the exception he's quoting applies as it's about imminent threats to life. His cavalier attitude allows him to try and rely on that.

While on his parents estate he failed to fully follow what is required of self isolation. As for the cock and bull story about going to Barnard Castle to check his vision that beggars belief. If I think I'm a bit tipsy is it permissible to go for a drive to see if I'm OK?

If you need to check your vision you probably shouldn't drive at all. Certainly there are other ways of experimenting either on line or with objects in, or around the vicinity of the home.

And all of that's before today's emerging tale that he updated his blog quite recently so as to appear that something he wrote last year touched on the subjects of Coronavirus and Pandemics.

As others have already said what Varadker did or did not do is neither here nor there; that's for Irish government and Irish citizens to pronounce on. In this context is 100% unadulterated 'whataboutery..

That concludes a party political broadcast by the NuLabour party. Whenever people use the phrase' whataboutery', you know they are a political activists playing their games.

Maybe you should be a speech-writer for Starmer, given you appear to like 'bull' so much. Or perhaps you should go 'work' for the BBC, Guardian or Mirror, who are now being investigated by the regulator after several acusations, including by former (and highly respected) Labour MP Kate Hoey, of lies (the latter two) and impartiality (the former).

One witch-hunt for some, not for others. Funny, that. I wonder why that is? Do you on the Left bear grudges until your dying day?

In the meantime, you lot and the MSM think that actually important news stories like China's crackdown in Hong Kong, them threatening Australia for 'deigning' to call for an investigation into the cause of the pandemic, or the invasion of Taiwan is just mere footnotes in history.

Get your priorities straight. Playing party politics during a real national crisis, especially when the government side was obviously not and having a hard time because of the patent mistakes of others (not DC) rather shows what the Left have become - a petulant bunch of revolutionaries intent on getting their way, whatever the cost.

Now we see the BBC's Emily Maitliss popping off (again) on live TV with another politically-motivated rant against the PM via DC (as have many TV news journalists who are supposed to be unbiased). The Left's real motivation is revealed, and it is neither honourable or has anything to do with public safety.

These are the trips we have made since lock down in March.

Shopping twice a week.

Wife to her mothers once a week to take her the shopping, collect/return washing and do necessary jobs in the house, she is 93, lives alone and will accept no outside help.

One trip to the vets on the way home from supermarket to collect some flea treatment, it was pre paid and placed on the wall for collection.

Another trip to the vets to have a steroid injection on one of the cats for a skin condition. The vet collected the crate in the car park, treated the cat and returned her. I paid by card when I got home.

All those are within the rules.

Would not have considered doing anything else.

Gee, there's a very 'balanced viewpoint' from a supposed academic who should not be posting partisan party-political stuff on a university website. As Avant said about the 'other' (now closed) thread, I think this has been proverbially done to death.

Perhaps you may want to consider discussing other topics and not trying to re-open old wounds. I'm sorry that I've played a part in it, but this isn't a political activist website, and it's suffering (especially given the pandemic and presumed lack of income from ad revenue etc and after the Januray takeover) because it's rapidly turning into the likes of the Political Betting website or suchlike.

We can and should talk about other issues - something positive (given the current situation) would be both welcome and worthwhile. Hardcore politics on a daily basis is for other websites. It's not as though we are any better off after such 'discussions', where the tone was set from the outset.

"... there's a very 'balanced viewpoint' from a supposed academic who should not be posting partisan party-political stuff on a university website."

Your sarcasm does you no credit and this sentence shows why it is so difficult to have any sensible discussion with you on political matters.

The article referenced is fact-based. Did you notice the copious links to back up what the author claims Cummings has said or done? And in fact very few conclusions are drawn in the article - the main point being that Cummings may be able successfully to defy convention. There is no statement that villifies Cummings.

You have in your mind translated this into "partisan party-political stuff".

+ 1 from me. Nothing else needs to be added.

Dominic Cummings - Another Perspective - Bromptonaut

Gee, there's a very 'balanced viewpoint' from a supposed academic who should not be posting partisan party-political stuff on a university website. As Avant said about the 'other' (now closed) thread, I think this has been proverbially done to death.

It turned up in my inbox this morning as I've long subscribed to the Constitution Unit's blog. I simply thought it provided a perspective away from media and with a degree of academic rigour.

As FP points out Professor Russell is in no way political over this. She simply describes what has happened and explores the Constitutional implications. As of now DC appears to be defying constitutional gravity. Can he continue to do so?

Other academic view points may also be available.

I hope so, but as things seem to have gone suspiciously quiet, I am a bit worried that this escapade may have been successfully swept under the carpet. Not entirely because of DC's crass behaviour - I dislike the notion of an unelected loose cannon pulling invisible and unaccountable strings.

I'm trying to work out the drift of this comment - what 'the worst' might be that I am allegedly hoping for. I agree that we should be pulling in the same direction, but only if it makes sense to do so. And what 'all' does it say ?

Surprise surprise. Andy is still not happy that the facts have been proven and the Barnard Castle trip would have attracted a fine especially with the stupid response it was to check his eye sight. I know its what I always do when I think I cannot see, lets go out for a drive.

Boris has probably got his way on this one but hopefully the public will remember and offload these lairs at the next ballot box opportunity.

Both Boris and Dominic are proven liars from the past, this just adds to their list.

Nice to see you're changing the subject about newspapers printing falsehoods in 'gotcha' pieces, which has far more of a negative effect on the government's pandemic response than a minor transgression of a rule at most.

It's all about agendas when it should be about a national effort. Charming.

The story here is Cummings. Most people do not see his transgressions, ie those he admitted to at the Rose Garden Conference, as minor. The letter from Boris, in which Cummings probably had a hand was quite explicit that you MUST stay at home.

Similarly if you think you've been exposed to Coronavirus you must immediately self isolate, not go back to the office, wrap up the days work cheek by jowl with others and then drive through the night to your Father's estate. So that's another transgression.

Cummings is not, and by all accounts does not want to be, part of some all pull together 'Spirit of Dunkerque' type of effort; his MO is disruption and chaos.

If there was a mistake in the Guardian/Mirror scoop about Cumming because of a surmise that he left Durham for London and returned that's neither here nor there. He went to Durham instead of staying at Home.

He, the government and his wife all knew that was dynamite which is why they prevaricated about his whereabouts during his absence and afterwards including her Spectator article.

Land Rover Discovery Sport - Dominic Cummings' 'stop for petrol' on way home - Brit_in_Germany

Looks like the prevarication may have been to keep his parents out of the public eye in view of the developing story re the cottage and planning permission.

For an ex-government employee who asked our advice to use the letter and spirit of the law to get his son off of a DUI so he could still go to work for the Home Office (oh, the irony!) to then conveniently forget about the lockdown rules as stated by the government (The PM wasn't going to spend several hours reciting them to us on TV, but hoped we'd use our common sense to look them up) is rather hypocritical at best, more likely playing party politics.

That hard left Labour MP Barry Gardiner seemingly helped to spread further falsehoods to his constituents and then deleted them after going on the so-called Floyd 'demonstrations' and voting in parliament whilst knowing he HAD COVID-19 symptoms and was awaiting the results of a test (I'm sure that Alok Smarma will thank him for that) 2 weeks AFTER the Cummings story broke is yet further evidence of the hypocrisy of The Left in all this.

Anyone see Mr Gardiner being doorstepped and harranged by the media and activists, given what he has done is FAR worse?

Similarly if you think you've been exposed to Coronavirus you must immediately self isolate, not go back to the office, wrap up the days work cheek by jowl with others and then drive through the night to your Father's estate. So that's another transgression.

He drove straight home. Then onto his father's estate to a cottage not being used. No contact with third parties. Unlike some (see above).

Cummings is not, and by all accounts does not want to be, part of some all pull together 'Spirit of Dunkerque' type of effort; his MO is disruption and chaos.

Really? He wants to expose the bad practices and shady political goings on of the Whitehall Establishment/Civil Service and change them for the better and for good. Given you worked for said organisation and think what they do is great (and I'm not talking about low level frontline staff or clinical staff, just in case you're wondering), you're hardly coming at this from an unbiased position.

The Left love choas - that's why they love revolutions.

If there was a mistake in the Guardian/Mirror scoop about Cumming because of a surmise that he left Durham for London and returned that's neither here nor there. He went to Durham instead of staying at Home.

More deflections. They got it wrong - the person lied. They still haven't published an apology - epsecially as they expected one of Cummings - why don't they be the 'better person' and give one?

He, the government and his wife all knew that was dynamite which is why they prevaricated about his whereabouts during his absence and afterwards including her Spectator article.

It was dynamite because the media and Opposition made it so. Funny how the (far worse) antics of Kinnock (promoted by Starmer), Tahir Ali (VERY significant breach but no action/fine or uproar), Corbyn (twice [two selfies - 'Doh!], no action), Gardiner (significant breach, lies, coverup, no action) have no yet resulted in any uproar in the media or any resignations yet. Only one did - a minor Labour politician who belatedly had the sense to resign her position as a Whip.

Wow! What honour and integrity. Not.

For somebody who complains about personal stuff you're remarkably handy at sticking the boot in. I'll think about whether respond to the generality of your post and keep this hamster wheel turning later.

I will though address the facts now.

My son was NOT facing a DUI. He was caught sheltering in his car while smoking a spliff and was therefore at risk of an 'in charge' conviction. There is a statutory defence if it can be shown that (I paraphrase) it is more likely than not that driving would not happen while he remained over the limit.

As that was exactly the case, he used the car to shelter from wind/rain, then he has a defence.

My post was to sense check my own understanding of that defence and explore its practicality. I mentioned the possibility of Home Office employment later in the thread, I'm not sure whether the offer had been made when I first posted.

I was merely pointing out your rank hypocrisy, given your own personal situation. Just remember, you came to us with questions on that score, which means it's public knowledge.

For me, it's akin to Labour MP Barry Gardiner scrubbing his website of that statement/letter I referred to and quietly slipping away from parliament after getting a severe ticking off by Mr Speaker for potentially bring the virus into the HoP, after virtue-signalling on protesting without social distancing as well as going after DC earlier. Even David Lammy MP called him out for his hypocrisy of QT last night.

In my view, you can't give the equivalent of 'I smoked X but didn't inhale' than say that DC, taking a common-sense decision in the best interests of his special-needs son, did not and therefore your son can get off a minor charge but DC cannot - despite the local Police saying there was nothing to take the matter further.

Nor do I think it particularly honourable for people to 'hope' that 'more allegations' will soon surface (presumably more liars will come forward like the 'second trippers'), just because you lot don't like the man or his political opinions.

As has been said many times, the electorate had their chance in 2016, 2017 and especially in 2019 to give DC and his colleagues the benefit of their opinion. They appear to have thought it worthy enough to support them with their vote.

Perhaps you need to move on (the vast majority of people have) and discuss actual issues of importance to most people. I'm sorry, but this just isn't one of them. The country and the world has moved on.

Rather than seizing the opportunity to accuse Bromp of hypocrisy, perhaps you should try to grasp the difference between his son's position and that of a major originator of a current policy whose face is known to the public. There are similarities in principle, but none of scale of importance, at least in the public's view.

Are you too blinkered to see that those responsible for formulating the National Effort should visibly abide by it ? DC's foolish errand in isolation is a small item. The identity of the culprit is what makes the event significant. He was clearly not pulling in the right direction.

Land Rover Discovery Sport - Dominic Cummings' 'stop for petrol' on way home - Joe-Alex

It's all about agendas when it should be about a national effort. Charming.

DC is a politician. He is in the public eye and, whether he likes it or not, is looked to as a role model on how to behave (all politicians are). The fact that he failed to abide by the very rules he and his cohorts laid down is shocking, and, arguably, more detrimental to the national effort than some piece in a newspaper.

Land Rover Discovery Sport - Dominic Cummings' 'stop for petrol' on way home - Andrew-T

<< DC is a politician. He is in the public eye >>

No, DC is not a politician, he interferes in politics, which is different. If he intended to be 'a politician' he would want to be elected, and also to be in the public eye, which he clearly doesn't, as he does all he can to avoid being photographed. Boris had to shove him into the garden at no.10 to be unwillingly interviewed.

To me, that is his least redeeming feature - he wants to govern in his divergent way, without going through established procedures, which for him are an unacceptable obstacle. If he were more in the public eye I might find him more acceptable.

"A pity that those on the Left support Soros, the multinationals (as they've gone woke) and the Establishment who want to keep control. DC wants to destroy that."

You keep coming up with this sort of stuff that just parrots the far-right's perception of the conspiracy that they say controls the world.

I guarantee that I could ask any of the people I know who are "on the Left" if they support Soros, or the multi-nationals*, or the Establishment - whatever that is supposed to mean - and they wouldn't have a clue what that is all about.

It is so predictably dreary that you come up with this again and again. You have become a parody of right-wing paranoia. At times you sound like someone who's been brainwashed - the jargon, the empty claims, the stereotypes. For an individual who likes to portray himself as educated and well-informed it's pretty ridiculous.

* Another astonishing assumption: that the multinationals "going woke" is the reason those on the Left support them.
