I'm asking to work from home for one day a week from now on. Going to be hard for them to say no.

The latest is you can go out to work if you cannot work at home. So painters, decorators, gardeners etc. can still work. Absolutely no need for window cleaners (if just cleaning outside) or gardeners to have any contact with their clients. Great for those professions to get exercise at work then come and walk dog for more activity.

Great thread just what we need. I once read on here someone saying they were simply driving in the sunshine listening to the Temptations and thinking "life's great". I could relate 100%.
Just had an open hernia op so signed off for 6 weeks Mother in law just had a stroke 100 miles away. No need to endure the hassle of getting time off plus either sitting in the car, hospital or in laws house gives me a sit down without being tempted to do stuff. Their house is converted so easier for me. MIL is a lot better and managing at home'
Whilst the family have been useless the stroke nurses have been absolutely fantastic and unknown neighbours have left food etc outside their house. What lovely people.
I live near the sea and watch the sun shine on it every day when not at in laws.
I have witnessed so much positivity that I deliberately do not tune in to watch the constantly depressing news. I know the score. I read uplifting threads like these.

The good things, on a personal note.
Now that India is in lockdown, I've noticed the 3 or 4 phone calls I get per day such as:
This in Microsoft, there is a problem with your computer, or
Your bank account has just paid £100 to PayPal, or
Your television service contract, we can save you money,
Ditto, washing machine, ditto fridge.
All of these con artist calls have suddenly stopped.
All sport leaves me cold, I am not missing at all the lack of football, rugby, formula 1, the olympics, the boat race, horse racing on the television.

Another handy recent invention is the contactless card, which means you don't handle money or touch a keypad for small purchases. And people really can't complain about not keeping in touch, with the internet offering all kinds of methods.
Visits to a dentist or hairdresser may become steadily more necessary ....

Funny you should say that I did suggest to my wife that I may see if there are any youtube hair dressing instruction vids I am sure the swear filter would delete her reply.
Now dentistry let me think, I have a dremmel and mole grips so not necessarily out of the question.
Learned how to clay bar the car yesterday or should I say not to clay bar the car.

If you need library books download Libby app on your tablet as long as you have a library card you can download to your tablet, even join libraries in other areas to get better choice.

No positives coming to mind just yet, still 3 more weeks to think of something.....

You are spending more time at home that can be a positive.,

Much as I like my home, spending 24 hours a day here is most definitely not good and while I have always been able to work from home I hate doing so so don’t. It will be interesting to see if those who are office based and had been asking to wfh will be quite so enamoured at the end of this. In reality my experience shows that most people like the option to wfh a few days a week but don’t like doing so full time,

Some of the contents of an ancient bottle of TurtleWax which has been lurking at the back of the garage cabinet next to its old close friend, a can of Graco Sprazon belt dressing, has been vigorously applied to the Audi A8 and TR7. They haven't looked so shiny in years! When my shoulders feel a bit better our Peugeot 2008, which has only ever had a plain water rinse since new in October, will get similar TLC, although it doesn't really need it.
|
Two good things from my perspective.
1. I got my bicycle out the other day and went for a short ride using up my ‘one’ daily exercise allowance. Great to be on the road with so little motor traffic.
2. Sitting at home enjoying the peace and appreciating the vastly reduced number of delivery vans noisily coming past my house and then back again (I live in a lengthy cul de sac )
And no, I am not responsible for part of No 2 as I don’t spend my hours shopping online.

I work from home when I'm not on-site.
Only difference is as it's my own company and 90% of the work in the last 12 months has come from mainland Europe, I now have no income.

I love working at home - more relaxing, can get more done, no need for 2 hours commute, can have lunch when you want and cook it, more comfy chairs, can be in for deliveries...what's not to like?

Assuming the current crisis lasts for at least 3 months, and quite possibly 12 month or more, there will (almost certainly) be a radical change in behaviours. Not for everyone, but the direction of travel is clear.
Work from home will not appeal to all - particularly those with small homes and young families. But for many (companies and individuals) the realisation that it is quite feasible, possibly even more productive, will lead to a step change:
- reduced commuting - time, congestion (rail, road and buses)
- communications and IT will rapidly fill most gaps in functionality
- possibly local work units (in every street?) for those whose homes are unsuitable
- going to the "office" will be once or twice a week event
This is but a small subset of potentially changed behaviours - eg
- major increase in online shopping - 5 years change happening in a few months.
- increased social cohesion - communities beome more important
- we realise we don't need to fly everywhere
- friends and relationships become more important than money
- realisation that the car is far less important than we currently think
And this will have impacts on the jobs people do, unemployment, property market (commercial and domestic), retail, pubs and restaurants etc.

<< reduced commuting - time, congestion (rail, road and buses) >>
So we may not need HS2 .... that £100 billion will be more useful elsewhere !! Almost anywhere else ...
|
Mothballing HS2 and Crossrail for a couple of years. Using the cash elsewhere. Yep That could be a positive.
|
Only most studies show it’s not more productive, many large US firms were putting employees back in offices before this. In the main, we are by nature social beings and wfh is not a healthy way to live.

Probably why I like it then - am not a social being by nature and find working from home much easier and can do more.

We already didn't go out to pubs and restaurants very much, I would say once evry couple of months.
Our local pub, (which is a "Hungry Horse" is only really fit for the "Jumbo Cod and chips" everything else appears to be precooked and microwaved.
Can't get to Frinton on sea for some really good fish and chips.
Youngrovergirl is a fab cook anyway.
But I agree that in the hard times which are surely coming an awful lot of "discretionary spending" will fall by the wayside.
This years class reunion in Budapest, cancelled, Hotel was charging 300 euros a night, air fares were about £200 each, Luckily had booked a rate with free cancellation and had not booked air tickets.
Easter trip to Lisbon had not yet booked..
I suspect I won't be the only one...........

Getting this back to the top of the list.
There must be MORE good or positive outcomes.
It's obviously c**p for some - financial, health, reationships, family etc - but burying ourselves in the depths of despair is, frankly, pointless.
Wife currently afflicted. Me a vulnerable person (apparently).
BUT THINK POSITIVE. NEGATIVITY DOES NOT HELP. BE POSITIVE.
