Must be a high emission engine registered after March 2006 . Don’t forget any existing road tax is not transferable to the new keeper .

Strictly, the V5 records keeper rather than owner.

The systems make it almost impossible to avoid paying twice for a month.

If you have offroad parking, it should be possible to SORN it for a few days at the end of the month, then sell on the 1st of the month?

Yeah I did wonder if we’d end up paying twice for a month as a family.

Funny how the move to computerisation didn't allow them to calculate it to the day rather than the month.

I'm sure one day computers will be powerful enough though. They're getting more and more popular, some people even have them at home now!

Costs extra to write software to do that, specially as they make more this way:( why bother

I have just transferred ownership of our Focus to a son. Did it on line on 31st Oct. He has taxed it from 1st Nov. We have had VED refund which included Nov so have avoided paying twice for a month, despite computer generated threat alleging it was untaxed from 1st Oct. So last day of the month seems best. No repercussions so far.....

I have just transferred ownership of our Focus to a son. Did it on line on 31st Oct. He has taxed it from 1st Nov.

I haven't managed to avoid a month's double VED yet. I think the only way would be (as you say) dispose online before the end of the month, and 'buyer' re-taxes early in the following month, maybe by post as DVLA says they record the transaction as day of receipt of letter.
