It is approaching that time of year and had a couple of questions, so phoned up to check.

Smaller, 15 " steel wheels with 195/65/15 tyres (Base model MG ZS 2017 instead of the current 17" alloys with 205/50/17.

Side mouldings along the crease line on the doors. for those car park dings.

Result thank you for telling us, smaller wheels no need to say anything, bigger, yes and premium increase.

Protective stick on mouldings, no problem.

Well done ORB. Useful information. A warning though. I was tardy in examining my insurance renewal last month from LV. It renewed automatically. I was not pleased about that. I went on line and got the same cover with LV for £28 less. So I contacted them. They tried to to tell me that the lower quote was because I applied on a different day! When I stopped laughing and told them this was nonsense, the operative was not very forthcoming so I asked to escalate the matter to a supervisor. None available. So I said a manager then. None available. Who is available I asked. Silence. Then, hold on sir I will speak to a supervisor. I thought there were none available. Silence. Hold on sir. A minute later, that's ok sir we will refund the difference to you. Thank you very much and would you also remove the automatic renewal from the policy. But sir, this could mean you may be uninsured if you forget. My problem entirely young man, thank you for your concern. very well sir, if that' what you want. I wonder how much money they actually make from empathy or omission. Be aware folks if yours is up for renewal.

Had my renewal from Aviva come through this week gone up by £300. Went online and within minutes had much better quotes. Phoned them up and said I don't wish to renew. But sir we cann reduce the price my reply no thank you.

Why do they have to do this it's about time car insurance sharks were sorted out. It's a licence to print money.

It's a licence to print money.

Yet they have lost out and no money printed...had the licence expired?

For Aviva it has.

They won't be getting anything from me l. I gave a new license to direct line to print the money as their quote was the best this time.;-)

Many (especially older) people receive notice of an increased renewal and pay up without comparing last year's premium. Even the AA and RAC have been accused of doing it. Some customers may just not bother, others may think they can do nothing about it.

I'd have thought the matter was well enough known by now though.

I always shop around every year at renewal time. If I've not had and accident or made a claim I don't understand why they they put the price up. People must just accept ot otherwise wouldn't do it.

I've been driving 15 years and got 15 years no claims on one and 8 on another with never having to make a claim surely I must be considered a safe driver?

Very wise to shop around for the best prices on premiums. I've been hiked the last few times for renewal premiums, when challenged one lot said it was because I had no fault accident, the other lot admitted liability and paid up. It was because I must be driving in dangerous areas............

It just seems like they'll use any excuse to raise the price. When our home insurance was due for renewal we was told it had risen because people in our area had made claims. We don't live in a flood risk area and you don't hear about break ins.

Like I said earlier it's a licence to print money.

I think we all know that the cost of repairing new-ish cars rises steadily, and traffic gets steadily denser so bumps may become more likely. Insurers have to cover their payouts somehow. Plus the trouble caused by everyone on here talking down their renewal cost every year .... :-)

Except they didn't in your case so a poor licence

They may have not got mine but they will have ripped of someone else. And I still stand by my comment it's a licence to print money.

I've had LV motor insurance for a many years now and for the last few I've renew online [with them] to get a better deal, and always look for the box to tick/ untick to stop auto renewal.

15/16 years with Esure - no issues as premiums varied up slightly year after year. 2.5 years ago House premium up 60%, the following month Car up 50%.

No claims with them in 15 years - in fact no fault claims in 53 years driving - some bumps & bashes but stationary in all but 2 with 3rd party to blame.

Cancelled & moved to L&G+Aviva - paying marginally less than Esure had been 12 months before.

Quote when cancelling car cover "Oh we can match Aviva premium"

I said " I do not give my money to companies that try to shaft me, I walk"

Just renewed with them both for a 3rd time - funnily enough ran comparison site checks & Esure were not far off what I am paying.

Breakdown cover is Green Flag direct - much cheaper than ticking the box as an extra on car cover.

What interested me with LV is that they didn't try to stuff me for a "modification" as the mouldings on the crease line are stick on, (double sided tape) and the potential wheel changes are to a smaller size, but still a change. Estimated premium rise compared to last year is a couple of £s so will stick with them.

Good idea to check it but perhaps it might be better to email them in future so that you have a record in writing if they ever should "forget" it. They do say that a verbal agreement is not worth the paper it is not written on.

Mine with Admiral renews in early December. I’ve been with them for several years now, with a multi-car and house insurance policy. For the first couple of annual renewals I’d shop around, find a better deal and get them to match it, or better it. They always did - and then one year I realised that the process was so automatic, I rang them and said that we could both save time and trouble if they were to just reduce the premium, which they did. So we’ve been through the same charade for the last few renewals. They have had the satisfaction of trying to screw more money out of me and I’ve had the satisfaction of securing a worthwhile discount on my family’s car insurance and our house insurance. What’s more, I know that my cover has remained unchanged, avoiding the need to compare potential new policies with my existing ones.

That about sums it up Senexdriver. It is not a licence to print money but it is scam where they rely on apathy and forgetfulness to sneak in a hefty increase for 'automatic' renewal. If they score a one in ten ratio that is all pure profit for no effort or expense. Likewise if they lose one in ten for doing this they are no worse off. Pretty shoddy business practice and not remotely within the spirit of any ethical notion of fairness, There ought to be a law........

The insurance market in the UK is pretty much unique, in that cover almost invariably goes with the driver(s) rather than the car, rendering teens almost uninsurable, prohibiting "fronting" and constantly punishing blameless drivers with hiked premiums after a no-fault claim. Anyone over 25 can drive my car in Spain, and with one phone call I can extend cover to any driver aged 18-24. Cover does decrease to 3PF&T, including on occasional trips to France or Portugal, but the legal minimum cover is always included if a policy is in force.
Quick straw poll - would backroomers prefer (1) to keep the existing "competitive", "always shop around" insurance system in the UK; (2) a "rest of the world" style "any driver is covered" system; or (3) New Zealand's (unique AFAIK) state insurance scheme, whereby car insurance is not actually required: in the event of a crash, the driver sues the state and the state pursues the guilty party for costs.
