I own a 19 plate Tiguan 1.5 petrol, if you turn off the auto hold and the stop start you will not get the kangerooing or the car switching on and off if you coast the last few yards to a stop with the clutch depressed

Left foot braking again! Does HJ read the questions? His reply “automatics are not really suitable for people who lose full use of their legs” misses the point that in those circumstances, safe use of a clutch becomes almost impossible. He gave the same advice to someone who had a stroke and lost use of their left leg, so would have been unable to left foot brake too. Changing any life-long learned experience (like driving) later in life is more likely to cause problems than solve them, and some people with the use of only one leg have no choice but to use that for both pedals!

Left foot braking with autos is essential when parking or reversing. In a manual, you use the clutch to control the car's speed when doing these. In an auto, too many people just use the accelerator with the right foot which is dangerous as HJ points out because people will mistakenly jab on it making the car shoot forward.

I guess HJ cannot come out and say the relevant reader should just give up driving and instead pointed out the pitfalls.

Left foot braking with autos is essential when parking or reversing.

As much as you may believe that, it simply isn't true.

@groaver, did you read HJ's Toyota link? Seems not everyone is as convinced as you.

Left foot braking isn't a solution.

For elderly people who get mixed up. STOP DRIVING!

For others, follow what your driving instructor tells you.

"Essential" ??
What happened to using 'creep' and braking with the right foot?

Or even the handbrake??

‘D’ for Depreciation

Not just you, my 11 y/o car has apparently lost 1/3rd of its value in just over a month according to the trade in value websites; from an insulting £765 at the end of June, to a frankly stupid £535 last week.

Batteries not included : HJ banging on yet again about hydrogen cars being 'the way forward.'

HJ needs to watch this video 'Everything wrong with hydrogen for ICE cars' youtu.be/gu1v7d7-Wh0

Who is saying that the hydrogen should be burnt? Fuel cells act as a catalyst to combine the hydrogen with oxygen, generating electricity in the process to power electric motors.

Re left foot braking. I am confused, does this only apply to cars with a dsg gearbox or also to those with a torque converter? I have owned lots of cars with torque converter autos and never had a problem with the car suddenly accelerating. The only time I used left foot braking was on a modified 1970s Humber sceptre that I used for road rallying and sprint events. Holding the car on the foot brake to build up the revs for a quick getaway as per the stall test for Borg water boxes.
When I used to tow regularly with a Volvo 240 automatic, I even used the torque converter for better control when reversing down a slope, (put in first and let engine braking and the fluid sheer effect slow things down) this car did over 170,000 with no problems on the same gearbox before I sold it.

I don't think any of it applies to you, gg - it's HJ's standard advice to any elderly drivers who are prone to muddling up their pedals.

Much as i'm not in the LFB camp, a chap in my home town might still have both legs if the older driver concerned had been hovering his left foot over the brake when his automatic car shot forward trapping the poor fellow.

My neighbour witnessed this and it traumatised him and everyone involved, let alone the completely innocent pedestrian who's life is now forever drastically changed.

I don't use LFB, i travel many thousands of miles a year in an automatic lorry, in which LFB is impossible even if you so wanted due to the steering column and floor pan design and it would probably be counter productive to use LFB in my car and not whilst at work, but when in any vehicle with any gearbox type and someone is in the ''target'' zone the vehicle is in neutral and the brake applied.

Common sense is still valid even if it has been made virtually illegal.

I own a 68 plate Skoda Superb with DSG, I run it on Tesco Momentum 99 RON petrol and this has stopped the "kangarooing" effect.
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 24-08-2019 - Brit_in_Germany

Just handed back a Skoda Octavia petrol "automatic" car after two weeks. Presumably this was the 1.5 TSi with a DSG gearbox. No evidence of any kangarooing. Very nice car, I must say with long distance economy approaching 60 mpg brim to brim.

edit: well, I am somewhat shocked. From a car park receipt I checked the car with the DVLA and it turns out it was a 1.0 rather than a 1.5 engine.

I have also seen a number of acceleration incidents, and agree that LFB isnt a cure-all.

There needs to be much stricter rules on removing licenses when drivers - elderly or not - become too frail/mentally incapable.

For example, Doctors need to be given the responsibility/right to report patients they think are unsafe to drive; and Police need to act and not ignore erratic driving.

A friend came out to find his car had been hit by an elderly lady who had been trying to reverse out of her driveway - 200m up the road!! Ricocheted off of multiple cars and died of shock a few days later.

Old guy living opposite me couldnt see to get onto his driveway after dark, despite fitting more lighting to the driveway than Blackpool can boast; not only still driving, but still driving at night!!! Also dead, not sure if car related.

Every week I see elderly drivers bimbling along at 15-20 mph, because that is as fast as they can cope with now; getting stuck at junctions, and their cars bearing the scars of all the incidents where they have collided with something/someone.

Re : Braking and entering,
Back when he was working, my late Father's department used to investigate such 'issues' for Ford. I remember they had a similar problem with brake discs, which were bought in from a third party supplier, because the supplier had changed the metal used to create the discs. The result was problems reported to Ford from dealers, this was back in the 70s.

RE D for Depreciation: what I read is "I need a greener car, which hulking massive unnecessarily large SUV will appease my conscience?" Unbelievable.

RE D for Depreciation: He's had the car 18 months and it's only lost £10k on a £35k car? Sounds very GENTLE depreciation when you consider the £35k was a retail price and the £25k a trade price.

Many new cars "list" at high 30's and are only "worth" low 20's as a trade in a week after registration after all.
