BMW 3 Series E46 - Advice on MOT history and other bits pls - Babygotoo
Morning all,

I was getting all excited about looking at a 2002 2.5 cabrio until I did a background check on its MOT history.

It's failed its MOT 5 times in last 13 years mainly for tyres, colour of indicator lenses, inefficient rear parking brakes, suspension arms have slight play, so not too bad, opinions pls..

Only 22000 miles in last 9 years, things that bother me

Current MOT has advisories for front pads and corroded brake pipe, May '17 failed MOT for corroded brake pipe, not mentioned on '18 MOT but Feb this year advisory for brake line covered in grease or some other material.
Failed an MOT in 2009, no recorded pass until 2010 with a further 1800 miles recorded.
MOT 2011 has an advisory for intermittent oil light on dash, no mention of this in any further MOT's

I think the trader wants top money for this £2.9k when compared to others nationally in U.K.?

Opinions welcome please, do I even bother looking or just wait.

Thanks

I'd imagine this kind of car would make its through a few owners due to being a cabrio, therefore in my mind the history is more likely to be a little chequered.

I'd be going over it in detail to assess the current condition. Some people will say "what else was neglected if they couldn't be bothered checking tyres before the mot?". I'd agree, but would still take a look.

£2.9k seems a bit rich to me, though.

My thoughts exactly on the what else might they have neglected, was looking for a car that was cared for if not an enthusiasts car, which is what I'd expect for that money.

Thanks

This is a 17 year old car, so i think your expectations may be a little high with regards to what you are going to get for under £3k. Not sure exactly what this would have cost new, but i'd guess in the region of £30k, and while it is now substantially less, the running costs are still going to be as per what they were new (adjusted for inflation). Yes, the 6 cyl petrols may well be the most reliable of the engines available on this car, but it is still far from certain that you are not going to encounter expensive problems to rectify. How many owners has the car had during its 17 year life?, and how well have they driven and looked after it?, especially once its value dropped below £10k. Will owners have gone to a specialist, or someone who knows how to look after one properly, or just the cheapest local back street garage?.

All things considered, the MOT advisory items you mention don't seem to bad, and i'm not sure you should be jumping to conclusions re the sellers price without having checked the MOT histories of cheaper cars.

I know it's a bit of a lottery, I'm going through some cheaper cars MOT histories now, the parking brake issues seem fairly common with the corroded brake lines as well, to be expected at a certain age I suppose.

Just checked the MOT history for the cheapest (2002>) 325 convertible (£1990) on Autotrader and as suspected, it seems a lot more worrying to me than what you have listed.

You get what you pay for, and in this case you seem to be expecting an awful lot for very little!

E46 - the six cylinder petrols are good and will last with regular servicing, but the rest of the car will fall apart around it at this age.

All fairly minor stuff but I’d want to be certain that oil light is off and hasn’t just been blanked or removed. The 6cyl engines are robust but E46’s are heavy on suspension components and never really drive right if non-manufacturer parts are used so don’t expect it to handle like a new one.

Convertibles are often just occasional use play things that only see the light of day during the summer so low mileage and patchy service records plus lots of owners are the norm so you’ll need to buy based on condition and check everything thoroughly.

As far as cheap 4 seat convertibles go these can be good cars, in fact I believe they’ll shortly make classic status and start increasing in value but don’t buy it if cost is a major worry as it will demand ongoing repairs and maintenance far beyond a similarly priced Mazda MX5 for example. Any warranty will be worthless and don’t expect much goodwill from any dealer selling it as it’s wholly unrealistic to expect such an old car to remain fault free. Basically your hand will forever be in your pocket.

None of that on the MOT would bother me much on a car like this. On a 17 year old BMW 5 fails in 13 years is actually pretty good.

It is the condition and what needs doing right now in 2019 which matters, not the past.

Remember MOTs are very subjective on some things and done at a rushed pace so it is quite common for advisories to come and go year by year. They really shouldn't be taken at gospel.

Oil light probably the orange low level light btw. Comes on for about 2 minutes after start. The sensors often fail and give a false reading.

That and poor handbrakes are just E46 "things". They all do them at some point.

E46 Beemers can be OK but are not that robust and need constant tlc to a greater or lesser extent. If you buy one you need to accept that it will have niggles and will keep developing more of them no matter how well maintained in the past. It is just part of the deal with an old BMW.

Been to have a look at it, looks ok and sounded great, but , zero service history, just one alignment check at Kwik Fit.

Not good enough so will keep looking.

Thanks for the feedback.
