Kia Niro and Volvo XC40 Reviews - Cumberbatchfan

Hi all , if made this thread for when I do , do a review of the Kia Niro still early days yet , but will be doing one near Christmas.

But just wanted to let you know my boyfriend has decided on the Volvo XC40 and told me to not worry about Volvo's reliability as he said illI be extending the warranty to 5yrs so I'll be covered and have peace of mind for 5yrs.

Anyways he's ordered the Volvo XC40 and once he has got it and owned it for a few months he's going to join here and do a review on this thread for anyone who may be interested in the Volvo XC40.

Iv decided that he's right and I should not worry about reliability as he's got the 5year extended warranty.

I like the volvo xc40, even if I could justify, the price I couldn’t justify owning one as I do very little mileage, even then my oh probably wouldn’t feel comfortable driving it as she’s only 5ft hobbit and a half, I wouldn’t worry about reliability especially if your boyfriend is extending the warranty, I bought a new fiesta last year with the eco boost engine, that everyone on here hates, but I also have a 5 year warranty ( at no extra cost) , hope he enjoys the car...

When it was first unveiled I took a shine to the XC40 on paper - sharp, modern styling, nice choice of colours etc. Test drove D4 Momentum but didn’t find it engaging. No gear shift paddles which are extra, didn’t like spidery detail on maps on a very large centre screen. I wanted to test drive T5 in order to move back to petrol but despite advertising them on Autotrader, a phone call dealers in 50 mile radius revealed they’d been sold. Also wanted full leather and was not prepared to order a T5 RDesign without a substantial test drive, but real bugbear was the 9 month wait for a car due to massive orders after the car of the year award and rave reviews.

Kia didn’t feature on the radar as I didn’t like the bland looks.

My experience too, Miniman. I was looking around last January to replace my worthy but stodgy diesel V60, and the excellent Volvo dealer in Yeovil let me have a long unaccompanied test drive in their brand new XC40 demonstrator - diesel of course. I'd been persuaded into the diesel V60 against my better judgement because there were no petrol demonstrators.

'Not engaging' - that's exactly it. A bit like the Nissan Qashqai - very comfortable and perfectly adequate, and it will suit a great many people, most of whom, if they're like the magazine road testers, will like the looks. I don't - but what do I know? I'm probably the only person in the country who thinks the RR Evoque is hideous (and both cars have appalling rear visibility). I suppose Volvo were keen to avoid the XC40 looking like a mini-XC60, which to me is much better-looking.

Hopefully Cumberbatchfan's other half will enjoy his XC40 when he gets it (it'll be some time): if he likes his current Lexus he probably will. I'm not a boy-racer, but I still enjoy driving, and I've no regrets that I went for the Audi Q2 (2.0 petrol).

On 2 occations we have been interested in a Volvo but the totally useless sales team at the local dealer plus no help from Volvo themselves has put us off.

First time was 2013 and the V40 was a recent addition to the range. looked a perfect replacement to the 118D especially with the 1.6 turbo petrol fitted to the T2 and T3. Went to the dealer and was promptly told they did not sell petrols. i pointed out petrols were on the price list and their comment changed to you could order a petrol but not test drive one. Lost interest immediately, drove the Leon, ordrered one 2 days later and collected within a week of visiting the Volvo dealer, never regretted the decision.

Move to late 2016 and planning to order a car for March 2017 delivery. Leon was too small but the V60 looked te,pting especially in T4 spec (2 litre petrol turbo 190 PS) Good spec and brokers were offering approx £8000 off list. Went to the same delaer again to be told they did not stock petrols thus could not drive one. Asked if they could find one in used stock within the group and they basically said you could do that yourself on the internet. So I e-mailed Volvo who said they had no idea what dealers had as demonstrators and to visit local delaer. Looked on Autotrader, there were several T4's with the previous 1.5 petrol but only one with the newer 2 litre engine, it was 150 miles away at a supermarket thus based on previous experience would not get a decent test drive. Gave up again and ordered the Superb, no regrets.

Like the looks of the new V60 and XC40 but unless the dealers have upped their game to include the current engine line up when we plan to swap next time I fear it will be just another waste of time.

Avant-garde yes he's got an 8-10month wait and Volvo said it may be longer but he's happy to wait as he's not selling his RX until he's got the XC40. The XC40 suited him as me and him aren't into cars for enjoyment from driving instead we just want a car that will get us from A to B ect.. , were very simple people really.

Sidpan- the first Kia dealer I went to was useless as well so I know that feeling but I had been told that you just have to find a dealer who's good and I did over 50miles away but was happy to drive that distance to get my perfect car. I find it a shame though that dealers are like that as were here to buy a car from them and there number one priority should be a sale but some dealers as my uncle puts it are just lazy.

Further to comments by Avant and Skidpan, worth adding –to be fair – my first choice of SUV was an F Pace, but was also prepared to look at alternatives. Mrs Miniman didn’t like the XC60 centre console, comparing it to a coffin!

Visited 3 Volvo dealers – one cheerfully told me in June earliest date for delivery if I ordered there and then was March 2019. LMAO. Another dealer couldn’t be bothered to get off the phone to enquire as to my interest, and the third offered the test drive but didn’t check if I had a licence or ask for any ID. Shocking lapse of checking, and yes the Volvo sales staff need a rocket up their collective backsides. I even emailed Volvo UK to see who had a T5, and even that info wasn’t accurate.

Looking for what might be my last car purchase (who knows), I tried an Evoke as Mrs Miniman liked them, but I found it stodgy, the interior very dull and dated with the sat nav screen at an unnatural angle. Reliability because of DPF issues was also a major concern given a lack of petrol models used. Also no opening sunroof. Tried a top spec E Pace, very nice, preferred its gear selector (like a BMW) to the rotary thingy in JLR cars, and liked the digital dash but no opening pan roof. More sluggish than the larger F Pace as steel not alloy construction. The F Pace was really nice to drive, but finding the spec I wanted for a £40-45K purchase (for an under 12 month old car) was fraught. It was always the wrong colour (wanted metallic red or Caesium Blue), no opening pan roof, 22in wheels and silly tyres, awful tan or red/black upholstery, no ITCP Pro, etc. Just one of 4 dealers contacted (Hatfields) went the extra mile to help find the right car but all boxes could not be ticked, so no sale. Even now, 4 months on from starting to look for a car, still no F Paces to fit my needs. It’s an odd situation. I did consider a Kodiaq but again, no dealer with a 1.5 petrol Edition spec, just the 2.0 diesel with a DSG box – nooooo way.

In the end, having had a few hours spare one Saturday last month, went and looked at a 67 plate 9 month old BMW X3 (G01), despite dismissing the marque early on. In hindsight, may have been a hasty decision as car did tick 99% of boxes - right colour, right sized wheels, right colour upholstery, opening sun roof and lots more. May or may not have some of the things the F Pace might have, I don’t know as all specs are so variable – a case of swings & roundabouts? – but time will tell if my decision was right! Having covered 1,200 miles so far, it’s an impressive and effortless drive. Also nice was salesman who was not at all pushy with the Diamond Brite, GAP and other insurances, though it was tough to move them on screen price.

but I had been told that you just have to find a dealer who's good

I don't buy from dealers these days, buying from brokers is far easier and you know exactly what you will be paying.

But you still need a local dealers to do the test drives before settling on the car you want, driving the cars at brokers dealers would be way too time consuming consdering the distances sometimes needed to be travelled.

Take the Leon as an example. I had the broker price from the web, went to local dealer who just happened to have the exact car we wanted in stock and we did about 40 miles on a test drive. I was prepared to do a deal there and then but after 4 hours with the salesman he simply would not budge on price, the only deal he would offer was the national PCP contribution that all dealers were offering. His PX was poor as well. He rang the next day (Sunday) to see if we wanted to go ahead, told hin yeas (again) if he would match (or nearly match) the internet price, he said he would get back to us.

Next morning I contacted the broker (Carfile). By 10 am I had spoken to their dealer, confirmed they had a car in stock, confirmed the on-line price and been offered £600 more for my car then the local dealer, total saving almost £3000. Collected car Friday am.

Local dealer never actually rang me back.

Brokers dealer was actually rubbish, dreadful paperwork mistakes that Seat had to sort out (I did get £200 compensation) and I would never use them again, not a problem, neither does Carfile.
