I 10 automatic 2009 68,000miles.

turns over , but not starting, up to now the car has been faultless.Previous day I topped up a low battery cell, original battery, and started the car to moved it two foot uphill into garage.

Sounds like your original battery has come to the end of its life.

Battery turned the engine over with gusto. Somebody on here with similar problem said a dead cell in the battery caused a non start.

New battery, just the same

Spark plugs have 31,000 miles on. Look OK, the threads on number 2 look a bit wet

New plugs just the same

googled it, lots of problems with immobiliser. no lights showing on instrument panel, ever.Taken shroud of the column inspected and reconnected connections. still not starting

If it is an immobilser problem, then it is likely to be the connector attached to the immobiliser control box. Access is behind the instrument pod .The unit is attached to a bracket above the pedal box. Not easy to get to.

has full tank of petrol, usual stuff.

locked and unlocked all doors

tried spare key

squirted some easy start into throttle opening, it ran for ten seconds

Checked any fuses? I would think the fuel injection fuses are in the engine bay fuse box

STARTED

Took out 20 amp fuse [ behind battery],looked good and replaced with spare, tried to pull out the fuel relay , but couldn't get it out. gave it a try. immediate response

This may not have been the cause of the problem this time, but never switch off straight after moving a car a few feet, if the engine is cold.

inconclusion the fix was to fumble with the fuel relay. Do you think breakdown recovery would have fixed it for me at home.

Yes, I once moved my wife's i10 a few feet when my brain was temporarily disengaged and it (the car, not my brain) would not start next day. IIRC we got the recovery man out and he soon sorted out the problem but it was a lesson learnt!
