Apologies if this is a stupid question, but are a clutch and a dual mass flywheel two seperate things?.

When i had my Caddy MOT'd in May, the mechanic reckoned the clutch was on it's last legs. But i wasn't too convinced as it seemed (and still seems) fine to me with no judder or slippage. But i also queried him on something else which i had noticed, that sometimes when i start the van, there seems to be a pretty harsh clattering, but mostly it is fine, firing up just like a switch. He told me that this was because the dual mass flywheel was starting to break up, also told me that this was quite an expensive job.

So i had been wondering about sourcing the parts myself beforehand, then i will already have them when the time comes. But i'm not too sure exactly what i'd need to be looking for as the clutch and DMF seem to be inextricably linked. So, would i need to buy a clutch and a DMF or do they come together?, also, is there a particular brand of part i should be seeking out over any other?

Thanks in advance.

Usualadvice on here is to have the garage that will do the work source any parts, if there are problems later the responsbility is theirs, if you source parts it could be claimed your parts were the cause.

A DMF is a two piece flywheel, the inner part can partially rotate relative to the outer part, rotation imited by springs/rubber, Google them or look on Wikipedia for a video clip of how they work.

If replacing either clutch or DMF it is probably best to do both at once as dismantling is a major part of the cost.

LUK has a good reputation for these items.

As answered by Galileo.

If at all possible, avoid splitting the chain of liability.

If you do intend to replace the Dmf at some stage, the cheapest part supplier is from main VW dealer.

As Galileo, better to let them supply and fit, an indy can buy in and fit LUK or other premium make, i believe Sachs is also well regarded.

Most recent family clutch renewal on an Aygo, the cost was near enough 1/3rd of the dealer quote with LUK parts used.

Thanks for the input!. My thoughts regarding gbuying the parts myself was simply that as i don't know how long the existing DMF will last, it would, knowing my luck, go at a time when there wasn't a lot of spare funds. So if i already had the parts, that would be a significant reduction from the overall bill when it needed to be fitted, i would only need to pay for the labour.

Does anyone have any experience or opinions on how long the DMF might last as it is?, or is that one of those 'how long is a bit of string' questions?!.

It might last another week, or you might get a year out of it.

A lot of clutch/DMF reliability and wear depends on what is known as 'mechanical sympathy'. Avoiding hard acceleration (especially in low gears), avoiding being in too high a gear with the revs nearly 'bogging down', etc.

The company I worked for specialised in vibration products such as crankshaft dampers (from the original BMC mini to ocean-going diesel ship engines).

When DMF's were first wanted for production cars the company was invited to quote for volume supply. After several months of design iterations and endurance testing they declined to quote, on the basis that they could not make a product which met their own standards of durability and reliability for an economic price.

It was thought unlikely that all DMF's would last the life of the car - some would but not all.

Thanks again. I had a look into some DMF related issues on a few other forums, and weirdly, there was no mention of the symptoms i am getting, i.e, the occasionally 'violent' sounding start. All that i read seemed to be talking about a constant clattering, though this would sometimes be only when the car was cold, and sometimes only when in low gears or reversing uphill. One other thing which i am now wondering if it is related, is an uneven idle, like something is out of balance. Is this another symptom of DMF problems?, just so i don't start worrying it is something else!.
