TOYOTA CAMRY 2.4 VVTI PETROL YR 2002 - Poor starting of Toyota Camry 2.4 VVTI (Year 2002) - Geoff (HJ)

Hello and good afternoon. I have a Toyota Camry 2.4vvti vehicle (year 2002). It has 80,000 miles on the clock. From cold, it struggles to start on about 80% of cases. It will try to start whilst I crank, but will not start. When you try again after perhaps another attempt or sometimes twice, it will start. Otherwise the car runs well. The engine warning light is not swtched on..

Have you checked the fuel supply? And are all the spark plugs working?

You

Yes, all plugs are new and the recommended ones. There was a problem before they were replaced and after - no improvement. They look fine when checked though - i.e. no soot etc. No oil usage in the engine at all just to let you know

What year is your Camry?

You

2002

Are you fixing your Camry yourself? What have you tried so far?

You

Yes, I will try. I tried the diagnostic check - but no codes. As I said, new plugs - not helped. New oil - well would not help normally but I can confirm I use the recommended oil - 5w30 so should be ok.

Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

You

Sometime ago the valves were checked - but they were fine with regards to the tolerances. Fuel economy fine. I would say it runs on LPG, but it has a problem starting on the petrol which is the main concern.

I used www.justanswer.com to get to this stage, but haing never used them I think giving out payments for general advice isn't something I am keen to do.

It could possibly be the coolant temperature sensor causing the cold start mixture to be too weak.

Taking it to a Toyota dealer may end up being cheaper than a "keep fitting new parts" approach.
