V5C showing keeper as me 'c/o another company' - Yakkity

So I'm in the market to get a new car, and amongst the many brokers etc online I've found a very good price.

I've done a fair bit of research and am aware of the V5C 'retention' that is used by brokers/dealers to get the big discount. In this case, the company I'm dealing with said that the V5C will be sent straight to me by DVLA after delivery (i.e. no 3 month retention). They have said that the V5C will show me as registered keeper, but care-of "c/o" another company.

They've also said I'm free to change the registered keeper and remove the "c/o" from day 1. My most recent email with them went like this :

So just to confirm my understanding :

  • V5C will not be retained by yourselves
  • I’d be first registered keeper and owner. V5C may state keeper as "My Name c/o Your Company"
  • V5C will arrive from DVLA straight after delivery of car
  • I am free to change registration at any point after this
  • I can truthfully tell my insurers that I am the registered owner and keeper
  • I receive the full 3 year manufacturer’s warranty
  • Should the car develop a fault within warranty I can take it any authorised dealer

And their reply was :

All correct, although it may say c/o "another company" (if it states c/o at all)"

Is this legit? Anything else I should be asking?

Thanks for any advice

Remember that it'll be 'your name, c/o another company ... at the other company address.

And when you change it, you will be the second registered keeper.

So while they aren't lying, they also aren't telling the whole truth.

When there are plenty of brokers who don't do it this way ask yourself why this one feels it is necessary to complicate what is a simple process.

You choose broker. You pay a deposit. They give you the details of the supplying dealer. You do the deal through the dealer.

Thanks for the reply. I'm happy with it being a pre-registered car as their price is a good £1000 cheaper than the cheapest non pre reg

Any other drawbacks with this approach?

If the V5C arrives showing the 'c/o other company' do I need anything from them to change keeper details to remove the '''c/o part"?

When looking into this I read on the drivethedeal page about pre-registered cars that the other company are still the legal keeper even if my name appears before 'c/o'. True?

Thanks again

There isn't any facility to 'remove' the c/o part.

c/o means 'care of'

You will, after sending the V5 in, be down as the second keeper.

So it will, basically, be the same as a pre-reg car. No mileage, and 2 keepers on the logbook.

I suggest you compare prices on that basis, not as a 'new' car.

V5C showing keeper as me 'c/o another company' - Yakkity

Ok thanks, got it. Pre reg would make it £6k off list price so it does make it very tempting.

I guess I am mainly concerned about whether I can legally insure and drive as registered keeper without needing to change keeper details (i.e. just my name as 2nd keeper)

If I can then there wouldn't be a need to change keeper details at all?

Food for thought I guess! I won't name them but website is d........d-n.w-c..s.com run by C...tV.....e C.......s if that has any bearing

It may also be that if written off in the 1st year that the insurance co doesnt replace the car as you will not be the original "owner" but the company is.

It is usual for insurance co to supply a brand new car if written off in the 1st year of it's life.

If you want tend to run it into the ground, then it does not matter. If you want to sell it after a year or two, you might get less as it has two owners. But more than £1,000 less?
V5C showing keeper as me 'c/o another company' - Yakkity

Thanks for the answers, much appreciate it.

Will be keeping the car for a good 5 years so having 2 keepers isn't a big deal for me. I just wanted to be sure that from insurance point of view having the "c/o" part doesn't mean that I'm not the registered keeper - if that makes any sense!

V5C showing keeper as me 'c/o another company' - daveyjp
You will need to check with your insurance company as it could be seen a third party is the registered keeper.

It's uneccesary complication in what is quite a simple world and insurance companies are wary of unusual set ups.

Buy from Carfile.net and you get the V5 in your name as first keeper with no dodgy nonsense. Their prices are more than competitive and when prices are very low there is usually a catch somewhere.

We have had 3 cars form them in the past 5 years and all have been delivered exactly as promised. We got a new Fabia earlier this month and the V5 dropped on our doorstep about 6 hours before we collected the car.

Sadly carfile dont do Peugeot..

What I am after is a 3008 GT Line Premium in ultimate red which I've been quoted £23600 for...hence the temptation (list price is circa £30k)

It's a tough call. I've emailed my insurer fir their guidance

Unfortunately as you say Carfile don't do Peugeot (probably a good reason) but DrivetheDeal and Broadspeed both do and they work in exactly the same way as Carfile and appear to be well respected. Carfile have been my chosen broker mainly because they are fairly local and so are their dealers. The dealers used by DrivetheDeal and Broadspeed are further away but depending where you live could be more convenient. Broadspeed charge a £200 finders fee but if the deal is still good I don't see an issue with that.

I very nearly used Broadspeed once (Carfile did not sell my chosen brand) but when their dealer e-mailed the order there was no expected delivery date shown confirming our conversation. When I asked for this to be confirmed he stopped communicating and I bought elsewhere.

They both do the car you are looking for starting at £24500 but that is for the 1.2 puretec engine (you don't say which you want).

If a price is too good to be true it usually is.

V5C showing keeper as me 'c/o another company' - Yakkity

It is the 1.2 puretech that I'm after. I think my issue is I was originally going for the allure plus options (£22600) but saw this offer for the GT Line Premium for about £1k more which has led to my dilemma.

I couldn't get away with paying £24500 as the financial director (Mrs Yakkity) would string me up.

So do I go with discounted-new-cars.com (the c/o pre reg place) or somewhere such as uk-car-discount.co.uk(1st registered keeper and pay after delivery)

V5C showing keeper as me 'c/o another company' - skidpan

Carfile will sell you a 1.5 TSi Skoda Karoq starting at approx £20000 but this rises with spec of course.

The mags seem to say its a better car and having bought 2 Skodas form the Carfile delaer in just over 12 months I can tell you its a nice place to deal with.

Their discounts on VW T-Rocs (same car as the Karoq) are even better but I have no idea what their VW dealer is like. But I would certainly be looking.

For me buying a Skoda/VW 1.5 TSi or a Peugeot 1.2 TSI would be an easy decision.

V5C showing keeper as me 'c/o another company' - Avant

Me too, not least because with the Peugeot - most Peugeots - you have to prod a touchscreen to change the heater and AC settings. Or do the upmarket ones have voice control, which reduces the danger somewhat?

Thanks to all, but I don't want this thread to be a 'dont buy that car, buy this car" discussion ??

My enquiries with discounted-new-cars.com are continuing. My insurers were surprised by the care of arrangement on V5C! They're going to get a decision from the underwriters.

Quite right. You don't need to suffer a bout of teeth-sucking from people (even Avant) trying to sell you a VAG car - certainly in the current publicity climate ....

And do you honestly think other manufacturers have acted any differently. VAG were the first found out thus got the most publicity. Doesn't seen to have affected sales though does it.

We are now on our 7th VAG car and all have been/are great.

And since it was VAG diesels that had problems and the OP is buying a petrol which was not affected your anti VAG posting is irrelevent.

Oh lighten up, Skidpan - do I need to put smileys everywhere to invite you to giggle a bit ? :-) :-)) Anti-VAG ? Moi?

You must expect a bit of thread drift, Yakkity, on a forum like this. No-one is trying to sell you anything: if you want a Peugeot, go for it. There's a lot in its favour: just don't try to change the temperature on the move unless your Finance Director is in the car with you.

Lol, amen to that ! I'm new so not wanting to dictate anything to anyone ??

Still undecided, will update when I've ordered in case anyone is interested.

A minor necro-bump...

So after an extended wait, my order ended up getting cancelled - as expected, some slightly iffy fleet discount was being used to source the car at the bargain price. Peugeot got wind and pulled lots of discounts. This happened the day after the head gasket on my Mk2 Focus went...

At the risk of "I told you so", I have ordered via drivethedeal - £2k more than my original order, but the discount is a whopping 25% off list price. I'm now dealing with a main dealer and have no qualms about the order being fulfilled or any funny business with V5C.

My conclusion is the original deal would have been fine for me, IF it had come off and I had got the car as planned at the end of July. But, those big discounts do come with a risk that the order may get cancelled at any stage...
