MINI Clubman - Motorpoint or Main Dealer - Happy Blue!

SWMBO wants an 18 month old Mini Clubman. Fine by me and the two major sources are Mini dealers or Motorpoint. For what are effectively identical cars of age, mileage and specification, the Motorpoint cars are about 2-3% cheaper. The cars are about £14,750 +/- £1,000.

I reckon for cars of that age we are best to buy from the dealer not Motorpoint but happy to listen to arguments either way......

When I bought my '16 Astra last year I used the Motorpoint price as the negotiating point. Main dealer basically matched the price, although the final agreed dealer price included 1st and 2nd service, 12 months breakdown after manufacturers cover ended, tank of petrol and set of carpet mats. So prices weren't identical, but value for me was comparable.

2-3% wouldn't be enough incentive for me to deal with Motorpoint.

Motorpoint doesn't haggle AFAIK; a main dealer might not either, but it's probably easier to get them to tidy up any minor defects in an approved used one - such as replacing odd or worn tyres, minor paint problems etc., and to sort out any faults that emerge after purchase.

Warranty should be secure on a main dealer car. If buying elsewhere ensure that servicing has been done on time.

I bought an eight month old Yaris from Motorpoint, it was £2k less than main dealer price for an identical spec, age and mileage. There had obviously been some sort of auction of ex-hire cars as there were loads around. The main dealer wouldn't shift on price, but neither would Motorpoint. The Motorpoint cars were all better prepared, clean, tidy without annoying little things missing like aerials, wipers and handbooks. The main dealer wouldn't show me the V5 for any car (maybe wanted to hide it was ex-hire), whereas Motorpoint had no such qualms and freely admitted they were ex-hire.

Annoyingly, the main dealer rang me several times in the following weeks to ask if I was buying their car, despite me making it clear I wasn't.

The Motorpoint salesman handed me the keys to several models and left me to my own devices. Readily agreed to a test drive and wasn't bothered when I said I'll go home and sleep on it. He obviously had me sussed and didn't try to flog finance, gap insurance or paint protection. All in all a much better experience (for me) than dealing with a pushy dealer.

Around the same time, a neighbour bought a second hand Merc from a main dealer and they delighted in recounting how they were fawned over and presented with a bouquet of flowers on the back seat when collecting the car, but couldn't see they were paying for them.

Only had good experiences with motorpoint.

Always worth asking them where they got the car from.

Motorpoints prices tend to drop after 3 weeks or so without any interest in the vehicles, I’ve noticed a car I was considering in the past drop £300 after it had been on their website for over 3 weeks

These minis are like the parent company BMW all about spec, packages and extras. Check that you are getting like for like car for the same price. Worth looking at Autotrader or Ebay for comparisons. If buying two year old still in warranty so no problem going outside dealers. A private sale should be OK if you do the checks

Thanks all. Car bought from Mini dealer with exact spec she wanted and £500 off the asking. Clubman D Cooper with Chilli pack and panoramic sunroof. 18 months old and only 3,700 miles. She's happy.

As long as it has a full main dealer service history with oil changes EVERY year then it’s not much of a worry. Motorpoint buy in ex lease stock and have a fairly laidback approach to selling them. Watch out however for poor quality paint repairs, particularly on more prestige models like this as main dealers will typically buy all the good ex lease stock. Anything that slips past into general auctions often has substandard paint repairs done before returning to the lease firm. They do buy in direct from manufacturers, pre reg or nearly new mostly mainstream stock too. Worth a look and also worth using them to negotiate with the main dealer.

You've been around long enough i suspect HB to make that 2 or 3% more expensive main dealer car the same or better value when you've negotiated the right service/care package for the next couple of years into the deal, maybe something extra on the warranty too.

Plus buying from the main dealer and pre negotiated maintenance should see more willing back up and possible goodwill after warranty has expired than the motorpoint supplied vehicle might benefit from.

As for BT's experience, i humbly suggest there's a world of difference in buying a Yaris to a MINI, the chance of there being any problems in the first 5 years at least worth mentioning are on a Yaris is minimal, this may not prove to be the case with a MINI, so may be better having some goodwill in the bank?

Never heard anything bad about MP although I dont think prices are so keen since they became a listed company with shareholders to satisfy.

If they were nearer me I would consider them but the thought of being over 100 miles away from the seller in the event of any problems would put me off.

Also be sure to compare like for like in the overall cost to buy and cost to run calculations. For example main dealers give freebies such free MoTs or breakdown cover as long as you get the car servived by them.

As a family we have bought 4 x cars - 3 brand new & 1 with 300 miles on the clock.

All have been 100% whilst we owned them.

Negotiated a discount on 2 cars £500) & refused to pay their handling charge & preparation charge as the cars were not "showroom clean". Tyres on Xtrail were only 20lbs / sqin ( they had read 2.0bar as 20!! Crv tyres were 55lbs/sq in - obviously freight inflated & not checked. Together 11 years & zero repairs on either.

Deal done at Mini. The exact specifications she wanted, got about £500 knocked off.

Ex BMW car, 18 months old only 3,700 miles with Chilli pack and panoramic sunroof. Happy wife on 1st May.

Regardless of other people's experience of MP - I have none - I can relate to having bought an R56 Cooper S from Benham's Wolverhampton (now Rybrook) and an R57 from Rybrook Stratford upon Avon.

My R56 (with pan roof) was used hard by me, and was subject to 3 claims under warranty, inc a new short engine. Still miss it and see it locally. Had first class treatment from Sytner Leicester, during repairs, courtesy car delivered to home, and regular updates on repairs. The R57 had one small repair under warranty, again, courteous and fuss free.

It's that kind of service you may pay a bit extra for. Hope OP wont have to resort to warranty and he and wife enjoy the car to its full, but as recommended by others, a yearly oil change not what the on-board computer tells you.
