Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 1998 - Replacing engine - Leinad

Hey.

I got a Opel(yay brand marketing) Vectra that had a catastrophic timing belt failure, so the current engine is toast.

I wanna/have to replace it myself since I don't got the cash for someone else to do it for me. What should I be aware of, and do I need any specialized tools or computer equipment for any theft systems etc?

Regards,i

Don't bother . Buy another banger.

Nah, I got it for free from gramps. A new engine is cheaper than a completely new car.

Do you have an engine hoist?, do you have tools?, do you have access to a garage?, how much will an engine cost?, how much will it cost to MOT it?

Here is one with 11 months MOT for £350, and i'm sure that could be knocked down a bit.

Stuff like this is literally worthless, so unless you want to do this as a learning project, it really isn't worth bothering with.

Yes, I got access for a hoist, Yes I got tools, and yes I got a garage, The engine should cost about 200-300£. I live in Norway, we follow slightly less strict rules about swapping same engines as you have.

The Vectra is good for another two years with our Norwegian "MOT".

As already said, it ain’t worth the cost or the effort. You can buy a decent running one of these for £300 and a minter for £700-£800. Unless it has a lot of sentimental value I’d bin it. To be honest I’d buy a petrol Mazda 6 or Mondeo both of which will drive much better and can again be bought for buttons.

Plus the used engine supply trade is notoriously corrupt. It’s full of utter rogues and cheats. I see one near me with lines of engines lying out in all weathers waiting to be crated up and sent to some poor unsuspecting soul who then fits it only to find out its humped. Then the battle is on to get a refund. Strip it down and return it sir... etc etc. Not worth the bother.

Sadly, these cars are much, much, much steeper in price here in Norway. You should expect to fork out 1100£ for a "running" car that has at least 2 faults with it.

Suddenly it became more actual to throw a new engine in it than buying a completely new car.

We got a Opel/Vauxhall scrapyard 20m drive from here that has a reputable reputation of being honest, and I've bought from the guy before.

Were this in the UK i'd be looking for a Haynes workshop manual for the Vectra B.

For model specific stuff like this, try posting on a Vauxhall group such as these chaps here.
