Following diesel gate Carlos Gosm s group which includes Mitsubishi, Dacia and Lada as well as Renault / Nissan has surprisingly overtaken VW Group and Toyota for the first time.

Renault were struggling under the burden of manufacturing in union dominated high cost legislation laden France. They wanted the flexibility to downsize in downturns but French labour laws denied them this lifeline and with a French government veto share they were denied the ability to ship production to cheaper nations so they bought Nissan then Dacia, Lada and now Mitsubishi. This gives them greater flexibility with the ability to shift production to suit exchange rates and market trends.

Being stuck in one nation is crippling and pretty much led to PSA’s near demise a few years ago and despite their current revival I see trouble ahead as much of it is based on putting the squeeze on suppliers to cut costs instead of addressing the firms fundamental problems and this doesn’t bode well for reliability and customer satisfaction in the longterm. I certainly wouldn’t be buying any of their products today despite having been a fan in the past.

So many people see Nissan as a Japanese manufacturer with associated reliabilty.
But Renault s move to buy Dacia gives them an economy brand which other manufacturers have ignored, to their detriment.
Wonder if we will see the return of Lada to the UK ?

Several firms have enviously eyed Dacias success and talked of creating a sub brand including VW. They moved Skoda too far from its roots and now it steals more sales from Seat and VW than any other firm. They should’ve kept it as a manufacturer of simple robust motors based on previous gen VW platforms but today often Skoda get the latest stuff before even VW. Nissan are looking at reintroducing the Datsun name as a low cost brand but they’ll just be rebadged Dacias no doubt so unlikely to appear here. As Dacia have proventheres a big market for simple, cheap and cheerful transport but I think even they are missing a big opportunity in the taxi market by not having a larger saloon/hatch/MPV in the UK market.

Didn’t know that, they certainly were talking up the idea for ages. Makes sense.
