What car to choose - lknights1987

If you were to choose a vehicle from the list below which one would you go for based on the price, handling of the vehicle, boot size, running cost and tax?

Honda CRV

Mazda CX- 5

Skoda Octavia VRS

Vauxhall Insignia

I've currently got a BMW 3 series estate but find the boot size quite small, and the comfort not so great on long jorneys.

For me...probably the CRV...you could then add solid reliability and good resale value to the mix.

2nd choice would be the Mazda.

Bear in mind you stated the basis on four items, then mentioned you didn't like your current car because it didn't have a comfotable ride as well as having a 'small' (a BMW 3 Series Tourer doesn't have a 'small' boot, even if it does in comparison to other estates).

In my view, the cars you mention are not really that comparable to each other - the Honda is comfortable, reliable and easy to drive, but not so quick or a good handler in comparison to the Skoda and especially the CX-5, but they are far more driver's cars and, if you got the CX-5 in Sport form, nearly as firm riding as a BMW, though OK in the good SE-L (Nav) which would have higher profile tyres as standard but still handles very well. The Skoda will be by far the quickest in top spec form, though not so much quicker to the Mazda otherwise. I don't know much about the Vauxhall, so notwithstanding others' reviews, go look up HJ's on the Review (Car-by-car) section of this website.

Your questions are a bit vague, and it would help if you first studied the car-by-car reviews first, as this may change your mind on these and other cars. Its also worth knowing whether you wish/need a manual or auto (this will make a big difference if reliability and/or performance is important to you as well), you type of use/estimated annual mileage going forward and your budget, including what you would allow for running costs (fuel, insurance, VED, etc) as a total, plus whether you intend to buy new, nearly new, used and/or in cash, finance or suchlike.

Such things could make a huge difference in what (even just confining choices to your list) people here would recommend.

How do you advise someone what car to buy? Maybe ok if, “should I buy a VW Polo or Ford Fiesta?” I want to buy a cabriolet but I would not advise my daughter with two children to do the same.

You do not even say if new or second-hand and only you can prioritise what is most important.

Price, how long do you expect to keep the car? Depreciation is a big factor.I don’t know much about the two Japanese cars but I would expect the Vauxhall Insignia to depreciate quite fast: makes it a poor new buy but maybe good second-hand.

You particularly mention the Skoda Octavia VRS, a sport model. Is performance and handling at the top of your list? It’s probably on low profile tyres so comfort is likely compromised.

I think that it’s up to you to look at boot sizes: no one here knows if there is anything specific you need to carry.

If you want advice, you need to tell us what your budget is (new?...secondhand?) and as much as possible about what you want from a car. Your first two are SUVs, the second pair either hatchbacks or estates.

Petrol or diesel? Annual mileage?

I had three Octavia vRS estates and loved them; but they were bought new and, if you need a car over three years old, best to go Japanese and petrol-powered. Generally, any of your first three would be a better bet than the Vauxhall.

If we’re talking new or nearly new and you cover a moderate mileage and don’t intend on towing something heavy I’d have the Mazda with the 2.0 Skyactiv petrol. Otherwise the CRV is the most robust option. It’s no joy to drive however while Mazda seem to have built an SUV that genuinely drives like a well sorted hatchback. If it has to be diesel I’d leave the Mazda in favour of the Honda.

The Insignia if it’s one of the comparatively rare 1.4 petrol turbos is a good big motorway mileage muncher but a Mondeo 1.6 Ecoboost would be more reliable and nicer to drive. The Fiat diesels in the Vauxhall I wouldn’t trust beyond the initial manufacturer or approved used warranty term.

The Octavia is a great car but I’ve heard too many people complaining about problems with Golf GTi/GTD’s which share the same running gear. Sadly VAG aren’t exactly basking in glory when it comes to reliability. My old gaffer had loads of woe with his Mk 7 GTi.
