I have been contemplating a change of car and have been using Cargurus.co.uk to alert me to cars being available.

The alerts give me the price of the vehicle and what they think it is worth - good bad, or about right.

I also enter the registration number into Cazana for their pricing. Sometimes this can be £1000 or more difference (cheaper or more expensive).

Does anyone have experience of which is most accurate?

I don't think there's a substitute for getting a shortlist, and then monitoring the pricing. Once you have a feel for the market in a particular car, you'll know if you're getting a good deal or not.

When I was looking to buy a nearly new landcruiser, I was aware that dealers were pricing at £28k, and looking to sell at a little below that. So when a dealer put a nice looking one up at £24k, I was straight in there. I did a deal where I paid the asking price but they threw in a towbar.

When my local dealer wouldn't go below £12k for a Yaris, I did some searching and found one with 600 miles at a dealer a couple of hours away. I bought that one instead.

As I have mentioned before, your price guides will need to allow for regional variation in the price of used cars, which in my limited experience can be anything up to a grand. A year or two back my daughter sold her Golf Plus to someone in Norfolk who was prepared to travel to south Manchester to buy. You could do the same of course :-)

Yes, not thought of regional variation too much. I hasn't expected that much variation. That said my last car was bought from Cheshire and was £1k cheaper than the exact same car (even to colour) in South Yorkshire, but that could be due to proximity of a car supermarket

Cargurus gives a graph of the particular car's price against other local an national prices, so that could be a good way to view it. It also gives the number of days at he dealer or on their website so extra information for haggling a bit!

I'll keep an eye on prices and get a feel for what I could or should be expecting to pay.when SWMBO allows me :-)

This is certainly true. My uncle used to make a decent living sourcing cars in Scotland/North England and moving them on into the trade in North London. He also owned a body shop so would add value with bodywork repairs too.

One that makes the dealer squirm is to either ask them what the part-ex value of the car you’re buying is, or check out the we buy anyy car price in front of them.

If you bought it today and sold it back to them tomorrow, they would only use the same system and pay you auction average value.
