When would my premium car tax end?

I am thinking of buying a s/h Evoque and the preferred choice is approx an August 2020 registration. So, I’m assuming the list price when new would be over £40k. I’ve read the information on your w regarding Premium car tax for models with a list price of £40,000 or more but I’m not sure when the 6th year of taxation finishes on a car registration on say, 1/8/20. Also, if I purchase the car part way through the taxation year, say, May 2025, does that alter the finish date of year 6 or is there a charge for a split year?

You can read in more detail about VED rates in our guide here - www.honestjohn.co.uk/car-tax/#2017tax - but the sixth year of taxation will end six years from the date of first registration, assuming the vehicle has not be taken off the road during that time, so for a car registered on 01/08/2020 the sixth tax year would end on 01/08/2026. If you use the government's vehicle enquiry service here - www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla - it will tell you if the higher rate is applicable.
