Old;mechanical lock only - Key wont go in door lock - edlithgow

As per subject. Have tried a skoosh with the GUNK equivalent of WD-40, to no avail.

Might try solvent (brake cleaner?) and a blast with compressed air next. I see graphite sprays recommended, but I dunno if I can get them here, though I can get pencil lead.

After that I suppose I MIGHT try to take it apart, but I'm not very keen. One consolation is its fairly low risk leaving it unlocked here even with stuff inside it, and I should make a sun cover anyway..

Graphite powder is the best but as your supply could be limited then the pencil is a good secomd best.

Rub the "lead" against an abrasive paper,

medium grade,

then contrive a delivery method.

The graphite powder comes in a squeezy bottle so the nozzle can be placed into the lock then puffed in.

And you cant get to much in,

Graphite is very soft so it lube as it's crushed.

Some on the key blade too then insert in remove and repeat.

This ought to lube the little springs and wards in the lock,

Never had it fail,

Unless the internal are very worn then the answer is obvious.

I`ve never found WD-40 any good for locks,it lasts a short while then makes the lock worse, but if the key won`t go in

I strip the lock then clean with either petrol or parafin, once dried, grease with lock grease then put back together-should last for life after that. not difficult to do

WD40 makes it worse long term, GT86 is better

I squirt my locks and door catches, all round, with Duck Oil. Back in my Mini days, I found WD-40 would still allow the locks to freeze up in winter, but I tried Duck Oil and the locks never froze again! I've done 217,000 miles in this Fiesta diesel and go around the door and boot lock and all the door catches regularly with Duck Oil.. Seems to keep it all working.
