OMG !!!

I was bleeding the air out of the car, using an allen key

and it dropped , straight into the hole in the engine casing where the flywheel is !

I could not believe it found its way in there, nor that there was such a flipping hole !!

Has anyone any tips

or is it gearbox off to get to the allen key.

I noticed by probing there was a bit of sticky oily crud at the base of the case...maybe it'll lodge itself in there, out of harms way .....yeah right

ps on a positive note, I think I've fixed the idle problem...
a rubber gasket over the heating element, under the trottle body.
kinda least of my worries atm :D

Have you been underneath and all around the bell housing, some have a clip or screwed on cover, or maybe i'm remembering looking for timing marks.

Its a difficult one, the allen key might have fallen right through to the bottom and stay there permanently out of harms way, but if it should be lodged somewhere it could in theory punch a hole in the bellhousing if it got caught on the flywheel or clutch, and i suppose there's always the possibility it could have fell into one of the spring housings in the pressure plate.

If you are going to risk it, i'd be inclined to trun the engine over by hand a few revs before trying to start it.

Amazing isn't it, if there was a £million sitting on doing so you could not get anything to drop in that same hole if you tried for the rest of the year, the law of sod.

Many thanks for the reply Gordon

I . could. not. believe. it. ! :D

I'm gonna try taking the flywheel sensor out and see if there's more of an access point.

I was just stood there , looking in amazemant !

Nope, nothing being dragged up, when I turn the car over by hand...

Tbh, wit hthe shape of the allen key, it would be tricky to get out ,
even if I could find it, which I can't

Would taking the start motor help access, or not really .

Maybe I'll have to put on my big boys shorts and man the hell up and git that gearbox out.

(never done before...not a clue...but that hasn't stopped me before :) )

Any tips, tricks?
Maybe I only need to open the case a bit to get my fingers in, to see if it's at the bottom

to be honest, I am half tempted to suck it and see...

the likelyhood of me botching the gearbox, is quite high.

and I need to soonish for work.

Maybe I'll get another for £500... if it all goes *bang*

I've had it 5 years...115,000 miles.

I think the timing belt is due a *bang* soon, as I did taht myself 60,000 miles ago.

Also, I don't even have a flat area to work on ...so a slip and it's goodnight from me .

what'd y'all think....

A rather stupid racing aquaintance of mine dropped a nut whilst he was fitting a camera to the roll bar of his car. No sign of nut so ignored it. Started engine and bang. It had dropped into the cam belt area, shreaded the belt and totalled the engine worth £6000.

Are you feeling lucky?

1997 1.1 Peugeot 106 - Spanner in the engine ! - liammcl

:) Skidpan

I am taking the starter motor out to see if I can get anymore fishing space...

tbh, if I run out of options...I'm gonna have to give it a go.

It was sooOoo unlucky that maybe my little princess is telling me it's time to let her go over the rainbow hill in the Skye...

Liam, if it was mine i'd turn the engine over by hand and if it feels and sounds ok i'd just run with it, if it jams up and cracks the bell housing you might need another box, but then splitting the engine and box is on the cards to fetch the thing out anyways, best of luck.

1997 1.1 Peugeot 106 - Spanner in the engine ! - liammcl

Thanks Gordon,
I have tirned it over, slowly, by hand and shone a torch into the hole watching carefully for any signs ... but not a glimpse

which means it's either at the bottom in the crud

or has gone over to the dark side (the clutch side *eek* )

Gonna leave it for tonight
as I have to go to work,
a callout 16 miles round trip
which I'll get to by push bike and kagoule

poncho power :)

Is there not a plate on the bottom of the bell housing at the back of the sump?

1997 1.1 Peugeot 106 - Spanner in the engine ! - liammcl

can't see one tbh,

you'd think there would be !
since the y have put a god damned big hole , which is a black hole for allen keys !

Anywho, I think I am going doen the suck it and see route...

Somehow when I had the starter motor off my Ford Capri (many years ago) I managed to drop a bolt into the bell housing.....After studying my haynes manual pics...I drilled a 3/4” diameter hole in the bottom of the bell housing and fished the bolt out then blanked the hole with a rubber grommet.... Sorted.

Now,
that is a cunning plan !

I decided to suck it and see....

thank you Gordon,
that is indeed what I did....

many thanks, as always

One of the handiest tools that I have bought was one of those magnetic telescopic pens.

I've used mine to dig me out of trouble quite a few times, ie screws dropping down into tight recesses, so hopefully it may help you too!

Haven't you got one of those little USB cameras with leds that you can poke in and have a look around?

1997 1.1 Peugeot 106 - Spanner in the engine ! - hardway

There is a plate that closes of the bottom of the gearbox to the sump,

Last one I did had one of the power steering pipes clamped to a steel fixing that was part of the plate.

Have a butchers.

Though a quick look at the manual it does look like an alloy plate so I can see how your confused.

I dropped the plastic cam off the end of the speedo cable on my Golf into the gearbox.
Thought I'd got away with it until the gear change seized up.
Got a tow to free the seized up car and drained the gearbox oil.
Still not much improvement do I tried again with fresh oil and let it drain overnight.

Next morning most of the chewed up remnants were in the drain tray and the car worked perfectly until I sold it.

But what a dreadful feeling when anything like this happens.

yes, I am waiting for a bump, crunch and boom

but to be fair.. there's a long list of other parts which'll probably get there first :)

HardWay,
If there is a plate on the peugeot 106 1.1 1997 hdz engine
I would be eternally grateful if you could find a pic etc .

I've looked at servicebox but can't see one for my model.
I think the different engined ones, or the saxo do..

v4heaven

yes, I got 2 of them ,
one as recommended hee...very good , about 4mm...
and another about 2 cm ...which I nearly got stuck :)

I tried outside the engine on an allen key, and it had to touch it to be attracted.

I also tried putting an allen key inside an aluminium tube, to see if a powerful welding magnetic, would go through ther non magnetic aluminium , and attract the allen key...which it did...up to a fashion.

In the end , I took the starter motor off too, to have a look both sides, but couldn't see it..

Cheers

well, an update.....

I wouldn't like to be the person who has to put this all together ..
ibb.co/mpwNpG

maybe if I go and have a cuppa and a biscuit, it'll fix itself? :)
ibb.co/gvxTUG

I idiot proofed another allen key :)
ibb.co/hVsv9G

what I did,
I took the starter motor off, and had a good root around with the magnets
and then as Gordon suggested , I turned the flywheel over slowly by hand, shining a torch into the hole to see if I could see the little sod anywhere...
did that 3 times..

tried the magnetic tool and another allen kley, inside the house, and found that it had to be touching to have any attraction. since I couldn't see it , it was going to be pot luck.
Also, the shape "L" of the allen key would've made it difficult, if not impossible to get it out through the contorted hole.
Also, I thought, best let sleeping dogs lie, rathert than drag it up and into harms way.
I guessed it was in the crud at the bottom, or over the clutch plate side...which I would find out soon enough.

So , this morning , I put it all back together..
one last turnover by hand,
and then used the starter motor to quickly turn a few teeth at a go
feelingbrave, I connect ed the coild pack...and fired it up

next test...the cklutch an changing gear
then out for a quick spin..
12 miles so far, and no problems..

Time and luck will tell , if it gets jostled about and causes damage..
but so far , so good.

Many Thanks All
Liam
ps why , oh why, is there a gaping hole there, anyway?

1997 1.1 Peugeot 106 - Spanner in the engine ! - gordonbennet

Congrats Liam, unless you go rallying the old girl i bet that Allen key will stay where it is.

I still think there is a plate at the bottom of the bell housing that would have come off a lot easier than taking out the starter. Back of the sump, flat semi circle bolted to the bellhousing.

1997 1.1 Peugeot 106 - Spanner in the engine ! - liammcl

I shall take a few pics and report back.

(I've put them on one page for ease of looking - just scroll down the page for more pics)
hj843260769.wordpress.com

It would be a good idea if they had've put an access plate there,
as that damn fool hole in the engine (Allen key cake hole) is begging for things to drop in !

160 miles traversed so far, and not a *boom* in sight
*BOOM*
:D

Cheers
Liam
ps , I saw on youtube that the gearbox can be wiggled out a few inches...
Not going to do it, as I like living dangerously :)

When did you last change oil? I thought Mann had discontinued the w712/8.

1997 1.1 Peugeot 106 - Spanner in the engine ! - liammcl

about 8 months back... I change it every year

I sometimes get the filter 6 mths prior , if gsf have a sale on.

Just had a look down the cellar, at the one for the next change... a Mann w7053 for £2.50 (I spoil that car ;) )
ibb.co/hqDT6w

All theoil is from overtightening the rocker cover, normally it is clean and fragrant under there :)

I have botched it with instant gasket (rtv black) until I see if Mr Allen Key makes an appearance ..

I'll get another cover before the MOT ... if it doesn't do a basil brush (boom, boom) before then

Cheers
Liam
ps 56% off atm....but they do up the price artificially (allegedly)
got some cataclean for £10 and other bits and bods...
