A6 Allroad - A6 Allroad used vs Tiguan new - JimmyV

So 3 year old A6 allroad BiTurbo will be available from Audi approved dealer for around 25K which is approximately 50% of its original value. With 25K you could buy a new estate or SUV like tiguan. However it cannot match the perfomance of BiTurbo and the comfort of air supension in Alltrack.

What do members think as sensible option?

Do you really want to buy a diesel considering the current state of affairs???

Unless the Audi was registered after September 2015 it will probably not be Euro 6 compliant.

Are you definitely looking for an SUV/Raised Estate with 4WD?

If your going Diesel - I'd buy new and probably on PCP to avoid any risk of future developments.

We need a bit of travel out of road. I won't say it proper off roading, probably lighter. That is the attraction of all road. It is decent on road and can do a bit of offroad.

How bad it can be with diesel? I don't foresee it will get banned. How euro 6 will make any difference ( apart from tax)

Do you live in a city or regularly drive into one? London has already introduced both the T-charge and Ultra Low Emission Zone and many other UK cities will introduce these zones in 2020. Also Parking surcharges have been introduced for older diesel cars....by getting a Euro 6 diesel you avoid some of these charges. Also you must consider the fact that values of diesel cars are plummeting - so when you come to sell it again it may not be worth much.... You can buy lots of SUV's in petrol with 4wd - granted some of them aren't very fuel efficient. By the sound of your choices you want something 'premium' VW, Audi but if you want something petrol, fuel efficient and capable off road then maybe a Suzuki Vitara.... Anyway if your stuck on diesel - I really would suggest buying 'new' and on pcp to avoid any risk.

Do you live in a city or regularly drive into one?

Live in a small town. Every morning and evening 2 mile journey between home and train station. Occasional weekend (long) trips.

I had a 2005 Mazda 6 which was good for long trips, but sold that now. I am using wife's 1.2 auto i10 which fits the bill most of the times except for long trips.

SUV is what better half suggests. However I do like driving and have to drive on family trips , so I am inclined to go for something closer to ground , but still an ability to drive to remote camping sites. Allroad somewhat fits the bill perfectly except the money. Insurance is around 650 against 350 for i10, tax is 250-450 depending on the trim and each tire costs 150 upwards.in the approved used market 2015 model cost around 27000. Servicing and repairs can be costly too.

Vitara is a good suggestion, but it is still an SUV which is high from the ground.

By the way from Nov 2014 allroad is eu6 compliant.

An A6 Allroad Bi turbo petrol will plummet in value despite the initial saving here but does your usage suit a DPF equipped diesel? Is it largely distance driving or local stop start? You’ll lose £15k upwards on the Allroad in the next two years! The Tiguan would make better financial sense but depending on spec, these things can reach over £40k with certain options which is far far too much money and again it’ll plummet as the used market resets it to a more realistic level. Stick with lower to medium spec models.

Far from ideal conditions for any diesel car, let alone an expensive high performance one.

I think you've set your heart on the A6 All Road Bi-turbo, so sure, go and get one.

But nobody on here will recommend it as a suitable option.

I thought it was a petrol model but I see there’s a 3.0 diesel biturbo. Large executives like this are annihilated if it has a large petrol motor with diesel almost the only sensible choice. They are however highly complex and will still drop quite heavily but nowhere near as bad as a petrol model. Only buy if it has a full main dealer service history and you’re prepared to fork out to continue this. Smaller workshops don’t have the equipment or expertise to maintain metal like this and used values are very dependent on this.

The Tiguan is a new model and very much in demand so it will hold its money better assuming you spec it right but to offset this you’ll struggle to get much off to start with.

If you like the big Audi, do enough mileage to suit a DPF equipped car and have deep pockets then go for it, it’ll be a lovely big thing to drive and a 4wd Diesel Estate will always be in some demand even if it’s complexity and size hurt it as it ages.

If your 'normal' driving is 2 miles each way from cold, then a modern DPF-equipped diesel is, to put it bluntly, a stupid choice.

The EGR on the bi-turbo diesel is also a bit suspect, I seem to recall.

Made of aluminium and prone to 'flaking' corrosion - can anyone confirm or correct me on that ?

Walk 2 miles in the morning and evening and use the diesel you so want to buy for the longer trips. Then it may just be OK but still not that sensible. But what car is truly sensible?

I really would re-think if I was you......You are bound to have problems with a diesel with the mileage and type of journeys that you do.....You seem to have a fairly substantial budget and as I said before there are plenty of petrol 4wd's on the market.....if you really need a 4wd? Seems like you just 'want' one - rather than actually 'need' one. If you really want the four wheel drive I would suggest the following all petrol engines: Suzuki Vitara 1.4 Turbo with Allgrip; Suzuki SX4 S-Cross 1.4 Turbo with Allgrip; Peugeot 2008 with Grip Control; Toyota CH-R 1.2 Turbo with AWD; Mazda CX-3 2.0 na with AWD; And there are quite a few others.......

Your original post stated Audi Allroad and a Tiguan - both high riding 4wd vehicles..........now you say you don't want a high riding car, 4wd is a bonus and you want a good driving car! I think you really need to make up your mind what your priorities are before anyone can help you....

Tiguan was an example of a new car which balances drive and offroad- but offroad more than drive I realize
