Jaguar S-Type 2004 - automatic transmission - may

My car suddenly lost power when I was driving. The rev needle was rising high when I reached 20mph! No warning light was shown! I only have 33.500 on the clock. I've had the car from new! Would a warning light come on if the gearbox was failing?

I'm a lady age 84 so not experienced in mechanics!

Regards May

First thing to do with any auto transmission fault,is to get the fluid level.and quality checked. Not something you can do yourself.Take it to a Jag or auto trans specialist..

The AA called to my house, he said the brake pedal was going down on its own. Suspects faulty brake servo.

The car will be taken to an aa recommended garage tomorrow.

Is this expensive?

Please answer my questions first. Then I'll consider this one. (but short answer is 'yes').

Get it scanned by some one who actually knows what they're doing.

Preferably Jag experience.

The gear box can actually be interogated with the right scanner.

And if you've had it from new then I'm guessing you have a reliable mechanic for any work.

Give them a call and ask if they have gearbox diagnostic sofware.

What happened next? Was power regained? I think it unlikely that the best bit of complex engineering in this car (the ZF gearbox) is faulty. Could you have inadvertently knocked the gear lever from D to N? Also, the cable assembly from the gear lever to the gear box can develop problems.
