2.0 TSI Scirocco 2011 - 4 times, still not fixed warranty running out! - Harry_VW

I bought my car last May from a main VW dealer and it developed a problem when starting from cold in June (video of the noise www.youtube.com/watch?v=slPcPpvNDGo). I have taken in to VW 4 times now to try and resolve this problem.

So far:

Harlow VW June 2016 - Replaced a return valve and told me it is fixed. Noise was back the next day.

Harlow VW September 2016 - Told me they couldnt fault the car, nor hear the noise.

Loughton VW November 2016 - couldnt hear the noise.

Currently with Harlow VW - Heard the noise, they have replaced an injector and want to give the car back tomorrow.

I'm not convinced at all that it can be an injector, i think it's a DMF as the noise goes away once put in gear.

My warranty is running out very soon and i am wondering where i stand with an unresolved claim when out of warranty. As i told them about it last year will they still help me?

Appreciate any help with this!

Thanks

Contact VW customer services direct, you'll find them quite obliging believe it or not. You have reported the problem before the warranty expires so they are obliged to continue trying to fix it if it is a fault. I would ask for some form of proof that you have done so though.

The thing is, a 'noise' is not a 'problem' or 'fault'.

'My seat is squeaky' : "Yes sir. But it all works. The movement parts all work, it locks in place"

I would say it is a problem. Have you listened to it? that happens 90% of the time when i start my car. Any idiot can tell something is not right.

Ask VW customer services or my local garage? I have emails from last year where i've sent video clips of it to the guy at VW that would show that it was a problem back then and i could show them it is still a problem now?

Does the noise go when you press the clutch down? If yes, video that as well and as you say it could be clutch/DMF, I would push for a replacement as the fault has been there from when you got it

I have a DSG and yes as soon as i select a gear the noise stops. Can only hear the noise in park or neutral.

I don't think it's the DMF, even though it does sound like it's a possibility. If it was it wouldn't just do it from cold though and you'd hear it at idle when warm too. I suspect a timing chain tensioner is your problem. It's quite common on TSi engines.

It's not unusual to get a little noise from a chain driven engine on a cold start but it should disappear pretty much instantly as oil starts lubricating the chain. Has the car been serviced by the VW dealer? Cheap aftermarket oil filter with no non-return valve can cause oil starvation issues and the incorrect grade of oil can ruin chains and tensioners.

I know what you mean about the timing chain tensioner but that it a short sharp rattle that only lasts a second, i dont think it is that. This noise lasts until the revs drop from the initial start up of 1200 to around 750. Or until i put it into drive, (which also drops the revs).

I service it loads, oil changes twice a year using good oil, using OEM oil filter. The DSG gearbox was serviced 4 thousand miles ago.

I'm fairly certain a DMF that was breaking up would rattle all the time at idle, certainly selecting gear/drive might quieten it down but it wouldn't just do it when cold. They need to rule out any issue with the chain or tensioners which can rattle like this if worn or starved of oil. Every motor I've looked at with DMF failure didn't quieten as it warmed up, the rattle continued. Of course I'm not a mechanic though but if the noise is still there when you pick it up I'd be friendly but forceful about not accepting it back until they properly diagnose it. You may need to switch to another VW dealer if this lot are unfit but I'd talk to customer services first.

Out of curiosity what mileage has it done and who has been servicing it?

43,000 miles. Do you think it could be an injector like they said? Apparently, it was causing a small precombustion / missfire but not bad enough to notice a missfire or a fault code to be logged. They said something to do with "pinking"?

Ive tried a couple of different dealers already.

Since i bought it in may 2016 VW have serviced it and i have also changed the oil. The noise didnt change from before or after either oil changes.

I suppose a knackered injector can make a racket and cause vibration but it does sound mechanical to me. As long as you've used the correct grade of oil and a good quality filter I don't see the extra oil changes causing it. I'd keep quiet about it though as they could attempt to pin any fault on your DIY. I had a timing chain ruined on a BMW 3 series once thanks to a so called BMW specialist putting the wrong oil in, even fitted the filter wrong and the thing sprayed oil all over the engine.

Let us know how you get on when you pick it up and stand firm if the thing does it again. Tell them you expect them to keep the car until it is repaired and make sure you involve customer services who will contact the dealer direct to assess what is going on. They will usually push them to resolve it.
