Not daft at all. There used to be a public info ad with an unrestrained rear passenger hitting the driver. Its stuck with me.
All my cars over the last few years have had various metal fixing loops in the luggage area and/or back of the rear seats. I would be surprised if the Rapid wasn't fitted with these - if they are not immediately evident they may be folded and hidden under the boot lining.
I always carry some Thule retaining straps and use these to secure anything heavy, via the metal loops, that could fly about the cabin. You can also buy cargo nets to go over loads.
None of these are as strong as a cage or bulkhead but, properly used, a good net and straps will offer some protection.
