Private Number Plates - J Harrison

Hi Guys,

I am thinking of getting a private number plate - Any advice on where to take a look?

I am really hoping for a dateless number (3 letters then numbers)

Thanks

Depends on how much you want to spend. For something cheap as a plate to just hide the age of a car, you'll find some private individuals sell through ebay et al. For more exclusive plates, a lot of people go through the companies who sell on commission.

You can also buy previously issued plates directly off DVLA (though most of the priced ones are not dateless), and DVLA also run a few auctions each year for plates that are likely to fetch more money.

As always, google is your friend. Typing 'numberplate auctions' or numberplates for sale' will pull up all of the usual companies and websites.

Try Regtransfers. I have bought a couple of dateless plates from them . They act as agents so after a bit of hard haggling you may well pay a reasonable price and no VAT.

I still find it ridiculous that a government department (DVLA) can create so much turmoil from a simple task like numerically placing an identity upon vehicles. In most other countries they don't have this farsical situation of waiting a few weeks for the number to change, as we do twice a year. Vehicle numbers are just produced in some sort of numerical order without overtly stating the exact period the vehicle was registered in. What possible use is this information?? In the event of the vehicle being traced or identified it makes no difference what the actual number is, as long as it is clearly visible. In the USA they can request a certain set of letters and numbers or they can take what the state issues. Either way they then keep the plates for life, swapping from car to car. What is wrong with that system?? In one fell swoop it removes all the snobery attached to number plates and the need to keep remembering a different number every few years or so. QED.

Cheers Concrete

Why would what was was an ex-government service do anything the easy way?

Why go straight from A-B when you can go via C,D,E,F,....................... & Z, those molehills won't turn to mountains without some help from civil servants.

After a number of years seeing the advertisements by numberplate vendors in the newpapers and motor magazines (on the back few pages) I took the plunge and ordered a N.Ireland number. It was relatively cheap and easy. The N.Ireland numbers usually have three letters (one of which will be an I or a Z) and four numbers. I have had the number on the last three cars that I have owned, some 15 years.

When I ordered the number I was the second in the area to so. Now it has become a trend and I see lots of cars with N.Ireland numbers.

The first one to do so had three letters ending with an I. He had put a space after the second letter and included the I with the numbers so that it looked like a 1. The effect was what looked like two letters and five numbers. One of my acquaintances, named Darren, had DAZ and four numbers.

Regarding N. Irish plates, my wife has 'CAZ 12' on her Shogun sport.

We've been offered a considerable sum for it by a Mr C Aziz.

The US style of plates stay with you when you change the car.If you want it to say something then they are called vanity plates. A friend has 'YIPPEE' as her plate. It cost $30 as do all plates.Thats a much better system than we have in the UK where plates can cost £50,000 and up.

There was a bit on Radio 2 this afternoon about personalised plates. Many people gave the pros and cons of having them. One caller pointed out (rightly) that a good number holds it value better than the car wearing it.

One of the cons is that a personal plate, once known to your friends and family, is very recognisable if you are somewhere you aren't supposed to be, e.g. secret lady friend's, horse race when you've booked a sickie. (not that I'd do anything like that!)

Doh ! I didn't think of that.

They'll recognise a random plate just as easily - got the T-shirt!
