You were ripped off. The codes are available for free - and instantly - here, as has often been pointed out on this forum:

For serial no. M021896 I got 2180. If this is the same as yours it proves you don't need to pay. I'm not sure why you went down that route.

I went that route because A. When I tried one of the sites mentioned on here it was a scam and wanted me to enter for a free gift card. B. There was no reply to my post. Not being technically minded I was having difficulty in getting the required information.
