There are many reasons for pitted or corroded disks, could be bad quality disks or pads, excessive exposure to water through washing or rain followed by a period of standing which could be just a couple of days etc, excessive heat, which in turn could be binding brakes or severe use, to name but a few and often a combination of all these causes.
Low useage (3k in 5 months is low) is likely to lead to pitted disks over time.
However feeling a ridge at the rim is normal, after 25k miles, the disc will have worn thinner, leaving a lip or ridge at the rim, because the pads dont contact there.
It costs around £200 to change discs and pads, less than half that if you diy. Just change them and move on.
