MINI Cooper - Motability insurance - I was denied - ThouShallNotPass

Hey,

Recently we were offered a new car on the motability scheme (my mother is ill). I and my sister were going to be the drivers. My sister often admits she is a poor driver having notched up 4 accidents in 3 years. She herself insisted that I (no accident's in 5 years) be ta main driver, doing the brunt of the driving as she lacks confidence, particularly in a new vehicle.

The only difference is I got 6 points (which have now expired) over 3 years ago for insurance related offence. Apparently my sister (who has been at fault for multiple collisions) can be insured on the vehicle but I can't even though my points have expired. If points can affect you after expiration then what's the point of even expiring them? May as well leave them on until they stop affecting you.

I'm so confused... I hadn't spoken to them but my mother said they claimed I need to wait 5 years AFTER my points expire (total 8 years for one offence). So not only will I not be able to drive this vehicle but I won't be able to drive the next car in 3 years.

This spanner in the works has thrown the whole thing into a mess. The purpose of this scheme is to help my mother who is immobile and my sister by her own admission is incapable of matching the needs of my mother (her confidence is shot).

We really don't know what to do. Any advice? Surely there must be something we can do as by denying me the insurance they are effectively blocking my mother the help she needs and therefore the very point of the scheme is pointless. I can understand having requirements but 8 years of no insurance for one person who has never had an accident /claim and only one relatively minor offence!? Whilst someone else with multiple crashes is allowed.

The punishment far outweighs the crime! Any advice? Is there anything I can do? E.g appeal? Or is it hopeless and I should just accept that this scheme just isn't for us?

Cheers in advance

You state that you got 6 points for 'an insurance related offence', don't detail exactly what offences they are, but then describe the offences as 'minor'.

Being evasive with the truth won't win you many friends here.

Basically, if you've lied to / tried to defraud / false claim / uninsured driver, etc, then all insurance companies will view you as a liar and fraudster for a considerable time to come. As is their right.

So ask yourself this. Would you trust someone like that, who has then tried to be evasive about it too (as you have here) ?

Because that's what you're asking the insurance company to do.

For insurance purposes, points, convictions, accidents and even no claim incidents stay on your record for a minimum of 6 years. As yours was an insurance related offence I'm not surprised they are denying you further insurance. Somewhere however will be an outfit who will be willing to insure you albeit very expensively. Do your research and phone around. Dont even think about driving without insurance.....it is not a minor offence as you have found out the true cost.

Brum, motability includes insurance, so the OP can't phone around for quotes. If they are not an acceptable driver to the scheme, then that's it.

The reality of the situation is that anyone with convictions for "insurance-related" offences will always be treated with utmost suspicion by the insurance industry - so the OP will have to take this on the chin - any attempt to hide the offences will just result in ever bigger issues in time.

It wouldn't be as advantageous financially but it may be possible for the relative concerned to claim the mobility payment and use that towards funding a car conventionally.

I'm really sorry we can't be more helpful here: I sympathise but I can imagine that the insurers who underwrite Motability won't bend the rules. You don't tell us what the offence was, but as it was insurance-related you can understand why they take a hard line.

The only thing I can suggest is that your sister takes some advanced driving lessons to increase her confidence. Maybe an automatic would help. I'd also suggest something other than a Mini Cooper: a Hyundai i10, for example, is much easier to drive well, and also almost certainly easier for your mother to get in and out of.

A MINI Cooper doesn't sound the most appropriate vehicle for a disabled passenger - as Avant suggests it might be worth looking at alternatives which are easier to access, and in a lower insurance group ... you might find that the insurers would look more favourably on a more sedate (!) and lower-powered vehicle.

I agree with Theo, a mini cooper sounds like its the kids choice and not their "immobile" mum. Op cant get insured but his sister drives albeit badly. What about mum?

Mobility cars are for the benefit of the disabled and not for family or friends to use for their needs.

I'd better stop there....
