Ford Ka 1.2 petrol 2011 - Ford KA 2011 gear selector shaft oil seal leak - Lockie

I've got an annoying leak from the oil seal on the gear selector shaft where it enters the gearbox. I'm a competent home mechanic but don't normally get involved in taking gear boxes apart. Replaced many a drive shaft seal before but this one has flagged 'caution' in that to replace the seal the gear selector housing has to come off and the seal removed/replaced from the inside....poor design or what!

I'm jittery about lifting the selector housing from the gear box because I cannot find any reference guides anywhere on how to do this. My biggest concern is that there will be 'bits' drop out as I lift the housing off and I will not have a clue where they go on re assembly. Also I have no torque settings for re tightening the bolts onto a a new gasket but I guess I can take a reading before undoing the originals.

Any advice would be appreciated, good or bad as to whether its a good idea to tackle this myself. We're only talking about a £2 seal if I can get the housing off and back on again correctly. I'm expecting some kind of splined end to the shaft inside the housing with a pinch bolt which can be undone, noting positioning, to allow the shaft to be withdrawn and the seal removed/replaced from within??

Look forward to any help.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Suggest you get a Haynes manual, there is one for your car.

May or may not go into enough detail for your problem but worth a try.

Hi Topdude, thanks for that and although I have a Haynes manual (I swear by them and always the first thing I buy when changing cars), they do not cover the overhaul etc of the gearbox - they just direct you to a gearbox specialist.

Unfortunately, Haynes are tending to reduce the amount of vehicles they cover now and on some occasions, the amount of detail they go into for the vehicles they do cover.

I guess I could do with some feed back from a gearbox specialist. I might even nip down to the dealer and see if I can get a print out of their exploded drawing of the selector housing.

Thanks anyway.
