Citroen e-C4 Review 2024

Citroen e-C4 At A Glance

3/5
Honest John Overall Rating
Recent updates mean the Citroen e-C4 is more competitive than before, while it continues to offer pretty reasonable value for money. There are cheaper alternatives, though, while its 260-mile range still isn't as impressive as some rivals.

+Stands out from the crowd. Good value with generous standard equipment. Family-friendly interior. Clever and useful storage spaces. Very comfortable.

-Performance is leisurely. Less spacious and practical than SUV alternatives. Not as cheap as an MG 4.

New prices start from £29,995
Insurance Groups are between 22–23

The Citroen e-C4 is an electric car that's difficult car to pigeonhole. It has the ride height of an SUV, the seating position of a family hatch and the roofline of a coupe. But it's also very comfortable, represents pretty good value for money and can now travel further between charges.

Is this enough to tempt buyers away from the new Hyundai Kona Electric and Chinese competition such as the MG 4 and BYD Atto 3? Read our Citroen e-C4 review to find out.

It's hard to keep pace with the amount of new electric cars hitting the market in 2023. Many of them are coming from Stellantis - the huge super group which now includes Citroen, Peugeot, Vauxhall and Fiat (to name a few). That's perhaps why the Citroen e-C4 has just been given quite a considerable update so early in its lifespan.

Cosmetically, the 'new' Citroen e-C4 looks identical to the original car that hit the market in 2021. But in order to keep it competitive, the Citroen e-C4 is now offered with a bigger 54kWh battery pack and a range of up to 260 miles. It's been given a welcome performance boost, too, although it's still not particularly quick by electric car standards.

No, the Citroen e-C4's talents lie in being a very comfortable, slightly quirky family car. A raised ride height means it's easier to get in and out of than hatchbacks like the recently-updated Volkswagen ID.3, while it's also more spacious than the Vauxhall Astra Electric.

We have mixed feelings about the Citroen e-C4's interior - it's a bit ugly, but it's functional and the materials used are of better quality than Citroens in the past. There are some clever touches, too, like the neat storage drawer in the dashboard and the clever tablet holder for the front-seat passenger.

There are now three Citroen e-C4 models to choose from: Sense, C-Series Edition and the range-topping e-Series. Weird names, but we reckon the top-spec Citroen e-C4 e-Series will be worth the outlay for a lot of buyers - particularly as it's not that much more expensive. It's the only Citroen e-C4 model available with the bigger 54kWh battery, too.

Prices for the Citroen e-C4 start from around £32,000, which is pretty good value for money for a very useable electric car (even if the MG 4 does undercut it considerably). If you're not fussed about having the longest range possible, you can save money by searching for a used Citroen e-C4, too - an early example can now be picked up for less than £20,000.

Citroen e-C4 handling and engines

Driving Rating
The Citroen e-C4’s driving experience provides levels of comfort and relaxation that no other midsize family car can match. Performance is merely adequate, though.

Citroen e-C4 2024: Handling and ride quality

The Citroen e-C4 driving experience is geared towards comfort above everything else. It has what Citroen calls Hydraulic Cushion suspension, which soaks up even the very worst potholes, lumps and speed humps. Very little wind and road noise gets through to the interior, either. The result is a car that’s serenely relaxing to travel in.

From behind the wheel, the Citroen e-C4 feels nice and light, if not quite as nimble as similarly-sized petrol cars such as the Ford Focus. It leans over noticeably when going around corners at higher speeds, too. Overall, the e-C4 feels perfectly safe and secure, it just encourages you to drive at a more relaxed pace and enjoy the super-soft ride.

One demerit to note is the sub-par rearward visibility, a result of the steeply sloping roofline and relatively small back window. This can make manoeuvring tricky, but there are parking sensors to help you out.

Citroen e-C4 2024: Engines

The Citroen e-C4 was initially introduced with a 50kWh battery pack powering a single 136PS electric motor. Performance was leisurely, if we're being kind - a 0-62mph time of 10.0 seconds is pretty sedate for an electric car, although we do think some of the latest, most powerful EVs are actually a little too fast.

A slightly bigger 54kWh battery pack is now offered in the top-spec Citroen e-C4 e-Series, alongside a punchier 154PS electric motor. The boost in power doesn't translate to a terrifically feistier acceleration - it shaves less than a second off the 0-62mph time, so it's still not going to outrun a Tesla Model 3.

Citroen e-C4 2024: Safety

The Citroen e-C4 was given a four-star safety rating by the experts at Euro NCAP. It protects those inside the car well, scoring 80 percent for adult occupants and 83 percent for child occupants.

]It comes with loads of safety features, too, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist and driver attention monitoring. However, the effectiveness of some of those systems wasn’t quite up to scratch in certain circumstances. For instance, the automatic emergency braking struggled to detect a cyclist.

Citroen e-C4 2024: Practicality

There’s as much space in the Citroen e-C4 as you’ll find in the vast majority of other midsize hatchbacks. In practice, that means a pretty generous amount of room in the front seats, allowing pretty much anyone to get comfortable – whatever size they are.

In the back, there’s enough space for a couple of adults to sit reasonably comfortably, though the car’s steeply sloping roofline does impinge on headroom. Still, it’s unlikely that even rapidly growing kids will feel cramped in the back, and they can enjoy a pretty good view out.

The boot has a capacity of 380 litres, which is exactly the same as the current Volkswagen Golf – and petrol and diesel Citroen C4 models, for that matter. The boot floor is height-adjustable, and you’ll probably leave it at the higher level so you can store the charging cables underneath. Fold the back seats down and there is 1250 litres of space. Just bear in mind that the sloping roofline does limit the size of objects you can load inside.

There are clever storage spaces dotted around the interior, too, including a large cubby hole under the front centre armrest and a drawer that pulls out from the passenger-side dashboard. There’s also a mounting bracket for a tablet computer on the dashboard.

Citroen e-C4 2024: Quality and finish

The quality of Citroen’s interiors used to leave a lot to be desired, but the company has upped its game massively in recent years, and this shows in the Citroen e-C4. Its interior design isn’t as bright and bold as in some other Citroen cars, but it’s easy to use and feels solidly put together.

Everything you touch most often is made from pleasant-feeling materials, although there are some harder, colder plastics used lower down. The seats look and feel good, too, and are hugely comfortable. Top-of-the-range models have seats upholstered in Alcantara and leatherette, which feel suitably plush.

Citroen e-C4 2024: Infotainment

Every Citroen e-C4 has an infotainment system with a 10-inch touchscreen display that stands slightly proud of the dashboard. Features of the system include DAB radio and Bluetooth. Choose a model above entry-level and it also has sat-nav.

It’s not the slickest setup, with a screen that’s a bit laggy in its responses and blocky graphics. You can improve matters to some extent by connecting your phone to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity.

All models also have a 5.5-inch digital driver’s display. It’s a bit small, limited in the information it can show and not especially clear, but it’s more useful than a traditional set of dials. Some cars also have a much clearer head-up display that shows much of the same information at eye-level.

Citroen e-C4 value for money

Value for Money Rating
The Citroen e-C4 represents impressive value for money, although its relatively small batteries mean it can't travel as far between charges as many rivals.

Citroen e-C4 2024: Prices

Prices for the Citroen e-C4 start at £31,995 and top out at around £37,000 for the bigger-battery Citroen e-C4 e-Series. It’s not the cheapest electric midsize family car you can buy, although most of those that cost less also offer less range.

Still, whichever way you slice it, the Citroen e-C4 is pretty good value for money. Especially if you’re happy to get a pre-registered car, rather than order a brand-new one, because there are some chunky discounts available. It’s even better value when bought as a used car, too.

Citroen e-C4 2024: Running Costs

When we first reviewed the Citroen e-C4, we complained that it could only manage up to 219 miles between charges.

Citroen's now addressed that by offering a bigger 54kWh battery pack alongside the original 50kWh battery. That means the longest-range Citroen e-C4 can now travel up to 260 miles between charges - a more competitive figure, if not as impressive as rivals including the Volkswagen ID.3 and Kia Niro EV.

There are advantages to having a smaller battery, though. It's quicker (and cheaper) to recharge, with both capable of being topped up from 20% to 80% using a 100kW public rapid charger. A full recharge at home using a 7.4kW wallbox takes around seven-and-a-half hours.

Private buyers don’t have to pay any vehicle excise duty (yet...), while benefit-in-kind (BiK) tax rates for company car drivers are negligible.

The Citroen only needs to visit a garage for regular maintenance every two years or 16,000 miles, keeping servicing costs to a minimum. The e-C4 comes with a three years or 60,000 miles warranty, plus its battery is covered by a separate warranty that lasts eight years or 100,000 miles.

Using a 100kW fast charger, the battery in the electric C4 can be recharged to 80 per cent in 30 minutes. At home, using a 32A Wallbox, recharging takes 7.5 hours with single-phase supply or five hours with three-phase supply and an optional 11 kW on-board charger. Charging can be controlled via smartphone, with ë-C4 owners able to schedule it.

The e-C4 is expected to cost around £30,000.

‘Shine Edition’ models also benefit from Citroën Connect Nav (with a free, three-year subscription to real time traffic updates), front and rear parking sensors, colour reversing camera, heated steering wheel and a two position boot floor.

The current best-seller in the New ë-C4 Electric range in the UK – the ‘Shine Plus’ trim – remains in place at the top of the range. ‘Shine Plus’ models add wireless smartphone charging, a HiFi speaker system with subwoofer, heated front seats and a ‘Hype Black’ interior ambience featuring black ‘Siena’ leather and black leather-effect textile seats with ‘Zephyr Grey’ stitching.

All these updates to the New ë-C4 Electric range are effective from today (Tuesday 11 January). They follow the changes already made from October 2021 production, which further improve the efficiency of all New ë-C4 Electric models. Changes have been made to both the heat pump and transmission system, with the biggest improvements seen in terms of real world use, with a range that can be increased by nearly 18 miles depending on usage conditions (outside temperature, type of roads, driving mode, etc.). These changes add yet more versatility and further peace-of-mind for everyday use and longer journeys.
