Citroen e-C4 Review 2025
Citroen e-C4 At A Glance
Given its maker's history of producing unorthodox models, this combination of hatchback familiarity with SUV styling cues isn't a surprise, yet its shape isn't readily understood by car buyers who like to organise models of comparable types. What could be key to its appeal is that it's a great value electric car — find out more about this and its other qualities with out full Citroen e-C4 review.
We're used to cars getting incrementally more expensive with every update, so it's great to see recently facelifted Citroen e-C4 actually get cheaper. Not by a tiny margin, either — Citroen lopped off a massive £5,600 from the price, meaning the cheapest is now around £26,000. Even the priciest one is a good chunk cheaper than any version of the outgoing model, coming in at a smidge over £30,000.
Since it arrived in 2021 a slew of lower-cost EVs have entered the arena, with the MG 4 in particular hoovering up an impressive number of buyers. Smaller Citroen yet similar in price is the amusingly named BYD Dolphin.
There are other models which share the e-C4's underpinnings courtesy of being part of the enormous Stellantis empire of brands that it must vie for attention with, including the Peugeot E-308 and Vauxhall Astra Electric.
A little smaller on the outside than the e-C4 is the Volkswagen ID.3, yet once aboard the benefits of its EV-only platform are immediately apparent as the VW's far more spacious. Sharing much of the ID.3's hardware, interior and bodywork is the Cupra Born — it's sportier to drive as well, but both models are pricier than the Citroen by a hefty margin.
The competion helps explain the price cut and also why Citroen offers the updated the e-C4 in two battery sizes. The 54kWh version's 257-mile range will doubltess appeal more widely than the modest 219-mile range between charges of the 50kWh version.
If those numbers won't suit the kind of driving you regularly undertake then remember the Citroen C4 is fundamentally the same car albeit with combusion engines instead of electric motors.
This isn't one of those facelifts where you have to play a tricky game of spot the difference. It's much the same from the sides, and the rear's not all that different but the front has changed a lot, incorporating Citroen's new badging and day-running light signature.
Is it an improvement? We'll leave that up to you but this isn't a car we've ever considered a looker in the traditional sense.
That makes it stand out from the masses as does its blending of the SUV and family hatchback worlds, and the emphasis on comfort. When so many manufacturers are insisting on making things firm and apparently sporty, Citroen's priorities lie elsewhere. It would rather you waft to your destination — a fine decision.
On that front the updated car retains Citroen's Advanced Comfort Suspension with its clever hydraulic bump stops to reduce jolts in the cabin, while gaining a new version of the brand's Advanced Comfort Seats with an extra 15mm of foam padding. You shouldn't have a sore back or bum by your journey's end.
The changes don't fundamentally change the car so if you're not eying up the bigger battery you might want to look at an older used one. Typically steep EV depreciation means you can pick one up an early version for as little as £13,000.

Citroen e-C4 handling and engines
Citroen e-C4 2025: Handling and ride quality
The Citroen e-C4 driving experience is geared towards comfort above everything else. It has what Citroen calls Advanced Comfort Suspension which soaks up even the very worst potholes, lumps and speed humps. Very little wind and road noise gets through to the interior, either. The result is a car that’s serenely relaxing to travel in.
From behind the wheel, the Citroen e-C4 feels nice and light, if not quite as nimble as the Cupra Born. It leans over noticeably when going around corners at higher speeds. Overall, the e-C4 feels perfectly safe and secure, it just encourages you to drive at a more relaxed pace and enjoy the super-soft ride.
One demerit to note is the sub-par rearward visibility, a result of the steeply sloping roofline and relatively small back window. This can make manoeuvring tricky but there are parking sensors to help you out.
Citroen e-C4 2025: Engines
All Citroen e-C4s have front-mounted electric motor, a single-speed automatic transmission and an electronically capped top speed of 93mph.
The Citroen e-C4 was initially introduced only with a single 136PS electric motor. Performance is leisurely, if we're being kind, evidenced by a 0-62mph time of 10.0 seconds. While sedate for an electric car it helps ensure that not too much battery energy is wasted with neck-wrecking bursts of acceleration.
Versions with the bigger 54kWh battery pack also gain a more powerful 156PS motor, although the 260Nm of torque it produces is identical to the lower-powered version. The boost in power doesn't translate into terrifically feistier acceleration, only shaving the 0-62mph sprint down to 9.2 seconds.
Citroen e-C4 2025: Safety
The Citroen e-C4 was given a four-star safety rating by the experts at Euro NCAP. It protects those inside the car well, scoring 80% for adult occupants and 83% for children.
It comes with loads of safety features including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist and driver attention monitoring.

Citroen e-C4 2025: Practicality
There’s as much space in the Citroen e-C4 as you’ll find in the vast majority of other family hatchbacks. In practice that means a generous amount of room in the front seats, allowing anyone to get comfortable — whatever size they are.
In the back there’s enough space for a couple of adults to sit reasonably comfortably, though the car’s steeply sloping roofline does impinge on headroom. It’s unlikely that even rapidly growing kids will feel cramped in the back, and they can enjoy a decent view out.
The boot has a capacity of 380 litres, which is exactly the same as the current Volkswagen Golf — as well as combustion-engined Citroen C4 models, for that matter. The boot floor is height-adjustable and you’ll lively leave it at the higher level so you can store the charging cables underneath.
Fold the back seats down and there is 1250 litres of space. Just bear in mind that the sloping roofline does limit the height of objects you can load inside.
There are clever storage spaces dotted around the interior including a large cubby hole under the front centre armrest and a drawer that pulls out from the passenger-side dashboard. There’s also a mounting bracket for a tablet computer on the dashboard.
Citroen e-C4 2025: Quality and finish
The quality of Citroen’s interiors used to leave a lot to be desired but the company has upped its game massively in recent years, and this shows in the e-C4. Its interior design isn’t as bright and bold as in some others in the range but it’s easy to use and feels solidly put together.
Everything you touch most often is made from pleasant-feeling materials, although there are some harder, colder plastics used lower down. There's also a large amount of glossy finishes which have more fingerprints than a Scene of Crime Officer's hard drive.
The seats look and feel good and are hugely comfortable. Top-of-the-range models have seats upholstered in Alcantara and leatherette which feel suitably plush.
Citroen e-C4 2025: Infotainment
Every Citroen e-C4 has an infotainment system with a 10.0-inch touchscreen display that stands proud of the dashboard. Features of the system include DAB radio, Bluetooth and — on all by You-grade models — integral navigation. It’s not the slickest setup with a screen that’s a bit laggy in its responses and blocky graphics.
You can improve matters to some extent by connecting your phone to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Since the 2025 facelift there's also ChatGPT functionality so you can ask the car various questions. We ended up triggering it accidentally causing an annoying graphic to appear that blocked nav instructions before eventually disappearing.
There's a 7.0-inch digital driver’s display that's complemeted by a useful head-up display projected onto the windscreen at eye-level on Plus and Max trims. It's not especially sharp in terms of graphics but its useful to have all the same. You version do without the HUD and the display screen is only 5.0 inches.
Citroen e-C4 value for money
Citroen e-C4 2025: Prices
The Citroen e-C4 used to be considerably more expensive than its combustion-powered C4 counterpart but price cuts coinciding with the facelift mean that's no longer the case. In fact, it's now one of the cheapest electric cars of its size.
The cheapest is the e-C4 You at £26,295, followed by the Plus £27,360 and the £30,150 Max — that last model has a larger battery and a more powerful motor.
Dealers will likely be keen to offload pre-registered versions of the outgoing model by offering big discounts. Since the technical changes aren't major this could be a good way to save a lot of money, or you could lighten the burden on your bank balance even further by going for an earlier used example.
Citroen e-C4 2025: Running Costs
As an EV the Citroen e-C4 produces no CO2 emissions while its being driven, resulting in benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax rates for company car drivers being negligible, although they will be going up to 3% in 2025. Also from April 2025 electric cars will start to be liable for Vehicle Excise Duty (VED).
In terms of driving efficiency, both 50kWh and 54kWh battery versions of the e-C4 are quoted at 3.7-4.4mi/kWh.
The Citroen only needs to visit a garage for regular maintenance every two years or 16,000 miles, keeping servicing costs to a minimum. The e-C4 comes with a three-year/60,000-mile warranty, plus its battery is covered by a separate warranty that lasts eight years or 100,000 miles.
Citroen e-C4: Range and charging
When we first reviewed the Citroen e-C4 we complained that it could only manage up to 221 miles between charges. Citroen addressed that by offering a bigger 54kWh battery pack alongside the 50kWh original.
Following the facelift for 2025, e-C4s with the 50kWh battery now have a WLTP Combined cycle driving range of 219 miles, with the 54kWh version is quoted at 257 miles. Better but still shy of what most Volkswagen ID.3s will easily achieve.
Citroen quotes the same charging times for both batteries but by dint of it being able to hold 4kWh less energy, the 50kWh version will be a little cheaper to replenish.
Using a 7.4kWh domestic wallbox charger requires 7 hours 30 minutes for a full recharge. If you're on a longer journey and connect to a DC rapid charger the e-C4 can handle a flow rate of up to 100kW resulting in a jump from a 20-80% state of charge in just under 30 minutes.

All these updates to the New ë-C4 Electric range are effective from today (Tuesday 11 January). They follow the changes already made from October 2021 production, which further improve the efficiency of all New ë-C4 Electric models. Changes have been made to both the heat pump and transmission system, with the biggest improvements seen in terms of real world use, with a range that can be increased by nearly 18 miles depending on usage conditions (outside temperature, type of roads, driving mode, etc.). These changes add yet more versatility and further peace-of-mind for everyday use and longer journeys.

Citroen announces new powertrains for e-C4 models
Citroen has announced a new powertrain for its electric e-C4. The new 156PS powertrain is available on MAX trim variants. Drivers now have the choice between a 50kWh battery and 136PS electric motor combination or the new 54kWh and 156PS powertrain.
The 50kW variant is capable of up to 223 miles between charges and is available across all trim levels. The new 54kWh and 156PS powertrain is now available on both MAX and e-Series trim variants and helps the e-C4 achieve up to 260 miles between charges.
Both the 50kWh and 54kWh powertrains support up to 100kW DC rapid charging, providing a 20% to 80% charge in as little as 30 minutes.
In addition to the powertrain updates, the e-C4 now comes in two new metallic paint colours. Okenite White is the new standard body colour across YOU!, PLUS, and MAX trim levels while Eclipse Blue, which first debuted on C5 Aircross, is now available on all e-C4 models.

Facelifted Citroen e-C4 and e-C4 X priced from £26,295 and £27,360 respectively
Citroen has confirmed prices for its revised e-C4 and e-C4 X models. Prices start at £26,295 for the facelifted e-C4 and £27,360 for the e-C4 X, and the firm claims that prices are £5600 less than the previous model. Both are available to order now, and deliveries will start in early 2025.
The e-C4 and e-C4 X both benefit from revised exterior designs, including the revised Citroen logo for the first time. The e-C4 is available in three trim levels: YOU!, PLUS and MAX, and the e-C4 X in PLUS and MAX only.
All models feature new 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10-inch touchscreen featuring wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic windscreen wipers and LED lights, rear parking sensors, and dual-zone climate control as standard.
The new e-C4 and e-C4 X are available with either a 100kW (136PS) motor and 50kWh battery or a 115kW (156PS) motor and 54kWh battery. The 100kW option gives a claimed range of 219 miles in the e-C4 or 222 miles in the e-C4 X, and the 115kW yields 257 miles in the e-C4 and 263 miles in the e-C4 X.
Both cars also now offer Vehicle to Load (V2L) with the use of an adaptor that can be purchased as an accessory. This allows an electric vehicle to supply electricity to external devices, transforming the car into a mobile power source.
