SEAT Arona Review 2024
SEAT Arona At A Glance
Insurance Groups are between 12–18
On average it achieves 84% of the official MPG figure
The SEAT Arona is proof that bigger isn't automatically better when it comes to crossovers. More comfortable, practical and desirable than the majority of its rivals, the Arona is one of the best all-rounders in the small SUV market, while its excellent range of petrol engines make it a great choice for those who want to avoid diesel. Discover all in our SEAT Arona review.
Despite the visual similarities with the Ateca, the SEAT Arona doesn't actually share any of its major components with SEAT's medium size SUV; it's actually based on the same platform as the fourth-gen Ibiza. And that's good news for those who value comfort and value over performance and handling.
The Arona is smooth and predictable to drive, while the ride quality is also excellent. Even sportier models on firm suspension and 18-inch wheels feel comfortable on rough roads. The only area of annoyance is the abundance of wind noise; fit the optional roof rails and the problem becomes quite noticeable at motorway speeds.
That said, the SEAT Arona gets all the fundamentals right. In terms of size, it's similar to the Juke and Captur, (measuring 4138mm long and 1780mm wide) but the lack of a fancy sliding rear bench means boot space is limited to 400 litres. That's more than you get in a Volkswagen Golf, though, while there's plenty of head and legroom to transport two adults in the rear seats over a long journey in comfort.
The SEAT Arona works best with petrol-power, with the star of the show being the three-cylinder 1.0 TSI. Not only is it smooth and hushed on the motorway, but it also promises an official 57.6mpg which means you no longer need to default for diesel when it comes to low fuel costs. Most engines are offered with a manual or DSG automatic transmissions.
While it might seem quite expensive against its rivals, the Arona comes with a lot of equipment as standard. Even basic SE models get 17-inch alloy wheels, two-tone metallic paint, LED daytime running lights and a basic colour touchscreen. SE Technology trim adds parking sensors and a larger infotainment display, along with navigation and full link connectivity for a mobile phone. Only those who want sporty styling or plush interiors will need to spend more on FR or Xcellence spec.
List price aside, we think the Arona is one of the best all-rounder compact crossovers. More comfortable than the Captur and more practical than the Juke, SEAT's second crossover is another success story for the Volkswagen-backed carmaker. In fact, to find a genuine rival, you have to look towards the T-Roc. However, badge snobbery aside, we think the SEAT wins on value every time.
We lived with an Arona for six months - find out how we got on with it in our SEAT Arona long term test. Looking for a second opinion? Why not read heycar's SEAT Arona review.
SEAT Arona handling and engines
- Engines range from 1.0 TSI 95 to 1.6 TDI 115
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 34–67 mpg
SEAT Arona 2024: Handling and ride quality
As small SUVs go, the SEAT Arona is surprisingly agile. The only competitor which really outperforms it in the handling department is the Ford Puma, but it has the edge on the Puma in terms of ride quality. That's especially true on the more basic trim levels, which come with smaller alloy wheels and standard suspension (rather than the sports suspension featured on Arona FR models).
It's easy to drive around town thanks to the high(ish) seating position and compact Ibiza-like dimensions, while light steering means you don't need arms like Popeye's to squeeze it into a parking space.
All but entry-level Arona SE models come with rear parking sensors, while high-spec models get the brand's Park Assist self-parking feature as well as front parking sensors and a reversing camera.
SEAT Arona 2024: Engines
As of 2021, the only engine you can buy a SEAT Arona with is the peppy 1.0-litre petrol unit. That's fine as, before that, it was our engine of choice anyway. It's available now with 110PS (pre-facelift models were offered this engine with 115PS) or 95PS, along with manual or automatic gearboxes.
Earlier examples were also offered with a 1.5-litre petrol engine which, while more powerful on paper, wasn't quite as sweet as the diminutive 1.0-litre unit. The Arona was also briefly offered with a frugal 1.6-litre TDI engine.
SEAT Arona 2024: Safety
Euro NCAP awarded the SEAT Arona five stars for safety when it was crash-tested back in 2017, suggesting you don't need to have any concerns in this department.
Even the most affordable SEAT Arona models come with a host of handy safety features, from a tiredness recognition system to hill-hold assist and an emergency braking system.

SEAT Arona 2024: Practicality
For a small SUV, there's a surprising amount of room in the SEAT Arona's cabin. You don't sit particularly high in the front seats (that's good news for headroom), while teenagers ought to be happy enough in the rear seats.
With 400 litres of boot space, the SEAT Arona can't carry as much luggage as, say, the Nissan Juke or Renault Captur (the latter comes with a fancy sliding rear bench which lets you increase boot space if required). It's a big enough boot for the weekly shop, though, and there's as much space as you'll find in a Volkswagen Golf hatchback.
SEAT Arona 2024: Quality and finish
The SEAT Arona's interior is well-finished, but you won't find as many soft-touch finishes as the very similar Skoda Kamiq. It did take a noticeable leap in quality with the 2021 facelift, though, with more plush finishes and the introduction of ambient lighting on FR models and above.
SEAT Arona 2024: Infotainment
Buy a new SEAT Arona SE and it'll come with an 8.2-inch infotainment system as standard, while higher-spec models come with a bigger 9.2-inch screen along with navigation and various connected services (such as online traffic updates).
This is a really easy system to use, while its position high up on the dashboard means it shouldn't be too distracting for glancing at while driving. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, too, meaning you can use apps on your phone via the infotainment display.
Pre-facelift Arona models largely come with an eight-inch display, also with navigation and SEAT's Full Link system (featuring Android Auto and Apple CarPlay). This is also simple to use, while old-fashioned shortcut buttons mean you don't have to faff around with the touchscreen too much. The basic SEAT Arona SE comes with a tiny 6.5-inch display which works fine, but we reckon it's worth seeking out a higher-spec model for the bigger display.
SEAT Arona value for money
SEAT Arona 2024: Prices
The SEAT Arona starts from around £19,000, rising to £22,500 for a mid-range Arona FR, and topping out at about £26,000 for a top-spec Xperience Lux.
If you're not fussed about having the latest model, the Arona's been on sale long enough that there are some good deals available on the used SUV market. An early example from 2018 can be picked up for around £11,000, while a two-year-old Arona FR could be yours for around £12,500.
SEAT Arona 2024: Running Costs
For ultra low running costs, hunt out a diesel SEAT Arona with the 1.6 TDI engine. These sold in fairly small numbers before it was dropped from the range in 2020, but could be a good purchase if you cover a lot of motorway miles. Officially, this engine will return up to 65.7mpg (dropping to 64.2mpg with the automatic gearbox).
Most buyers will be better looking for a petrol model, though. The 1.0-litre TSI officially returns up to 51.4mpg (depending on specification), while the eager 1.5 officially returns up to 45.6mpg.
No SEAT Arona will cost a fortune to run, while tax and insurance costs should also be reasonable. The latest models will cost a flat rate of £155/year in VED – the same as any petrol-powered rival.

The entry-level SEAT Arona SE features 17-inch alloy wheels, metallic paint, a small 6.5-inch media system with DAB radio and smartphone integration (upgraded to 8.2-inches from 2021), interior ambient lighting, a leather steering wheel, cruise control and air conditioning.
The SEAT Arona SE Technology adds the Connectivity Pack Plus, with its eight-inch touchscreen sat-nav (later 9.2-inches), wireless phone charger and USB-C port. It also gets rear parking sensors as standard.
The SEAT Arona FR features tinted rear windows, colour-coded door mirrors, LED headlights and taillights, chrome window trim and chrome roof rails. Inside, you'll find a leatherette dashboard, front sport seats and a flat-bottomed steering wheel finished in perforated leather with red stitching. Dual-zone climate control is standard, as well as automatic rain-sensing wipers, sport suspension and an alarm system.
The SEAT Arona FR Sport adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a Digital Cockpit, microsuede upholstery and heated front seats.
The high-spec SEAT Arona Xcellence (later renamed the Arona Xperience) comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, a white dashboard, storage pockets on the back of the front seats, the Storage Pack (including a front centre armrest and a drawer under the front passenger seat), adaptive cruise control and keyless entry and go.
Topping the SEAT Arona range is the Xcellence Lux (later badged the Xperience Lux). Highlights include 18-inch alloy wheels, Digital Cockpit, a leatherette dash and microsuede upholstery, park assist, front parking sensors, a rear-view camera and heated front seats.

October 2017
SEAT Arona launched
Priced from £16,555, the SEAT Arona is the first compact crossover in the Volkswagen Group to use the state-of-the-art vehicle platform, MQB A0, the same as Ibiza.
The trims follow with other SEAT models, with SE, FR and XCELLENCE, but, with each level expanded into additional versions that add in more equipment: SE Technology, FR Sport and XCELLENCE Lux. SE and XCELLENCE First Edition models come even better equipped for a limited period.
The SE grade includes metallic paint as standard, 17-inch alloy wheels, bi-colour roof, black roof rails, chrome front grille, power-adjustable door mirrors, LED daytime running lights and tail lights, front cornering fog lights and automatic headlights.
Inside, there’s air conditioning, height-adjustable front seats, split-folding rear seat, handy double boot floor, electric windows front and rear, chrome detailing and leather trim for the gear knob and handbrake. SEAT’s Media System Colour provides a five-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio with DAB radio, Bluetooth and aux-in/USB connections.
SEAT’s safety and driver assistance features include Front Assist, Multi-Collision Braking, Hill Hold Control and Tiredness Recognition System. That’s all in addition to cruise control, a full complement of front-side-curtain airbags, active front head restraints and Isofix child seat mounts.
The SE Technology models upgrade with the Connectivity Pack Plus. This provides a larger, eight-inch colour touchscreen and proximity sensor and a navigation package that provides 3D map display and voice control. SEAT Full Link provides seamless connection with compatible smartphones using MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto. There’s also a wireless phone charger, an additional USB port, two SD card slots and rear parking sensors.
The SE Technology First Edition – exclusively with the 1.0 TSI 95 PS engine – gets a Storage Pack (front-centre arm rest, drawer beneath driver’s seat and load anchorage points in the boot), Winter Pack (heated front seats and heated washer nozzles), rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rear-view mirrors, coming/leaving home headlight functions, heated/folding door mirrors, dual-zone climate control, KESSY keyless entry and go and adaptive cruise control.
Moving up from SE Technology to FR grade, the Arona gains plenty of sporty style, in features such as the 17-inch Dynamic alloys, full LED headlights, chrome roof rails, dark-tinted rear windows, twin tailpipes and (heated/folding) door mirrors with casings that match the contrast roof colour.
Inside, the FR is equipped with sports front seats and an exclusive flat-bottom steering wheel, multi-colour ambient lighting and FR-exclusive trim details, SEAT Drive Profile, rear disc brakes are added, together with an alarm, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, coming/leaving home headlight functions and dual-zone climate control.
The FR Sport models gain larger, 18-inch Performance alloy wheels, Dynamic Chassis Control and black Alcantara upholstery.
XCELLENCE trim includes the Storage Pack, KESSY keyless-entry-and-go, front seatback storage pockets, Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
The Arona XCELLENCE Lux has 18-inch Performance alloys, black Alcantara upholstery, the SEAT Drive Profile, front parking sensors, a rear-view camera and Park Assist. But for the no-holds-barred Arona indulgence, the XCELLENCE First Edition packs a powerful Beats Sound System, the Winter Pack and all you need for safe and simple parking manoeuvres – front sensor, rear-view camera and Park Assist.
Engines include three petrol units, starting with the 1.0 TSI 95PS, matched to a five-speed manual gearbox. It is also available in 115PS, and with an extra gear duly added to the transmission. Combined fuel economy is up to 57.6 miles per gallon with 111 g/km of CO2 emissions.
The more powerful version of this three-cylinder unit will also be offered with DSG automatic transmission. FR and FR Sport models will live up to their dynamic looks with exclusive use of the 1.5 TSI 150 EVO engine, which makes adept use of automatic cylinder de-activation. The new Arona will also feature a 1.6 TDI engine, with 95PS or 115PS – the former optionally available with DSG.
The new Arona offers a bright spectrum of colours (including Desire Red and Mystery Blue) and the chance for customers to make their car stand out with up to 30 different combinations, matching or contrasting the finish for the lower body and roof and pillars. Three roof colour choices are available – black, grey and orange.

Digital Cockpit introduced to Arona range
The SEAT Arona is the first crossover on the market to benefit from the 10.25-inch interactive, customisable display, which has already aided drivers in the SEAT Leon and Ateca since January 2018. In the UK, the Digital Cockpit comes as standard in XCELLENCE Lux and FR Sport trim for Arona, Ibiza, Leon and Ateca.
The pixel-dense digital instrumentation not only has a more modern and versatile design, but provides greater functionality, allowing drivers to view everything from classic information found on analogue dials, such as speedometer and tachometer, to full-colour maps and navigation (as optional equipment).

Customers can choose from six distinct trims (SE, SE Technology, FR, FR Sport, XPERIENCE and XPERIENCE Lux), matching the desired trim level to the power output that suits them best.
The new Arona 1.0 TSI EVO 95PS can be specified with SE and SE Technology trim, whereas the 1.0 TSI 110PS is available from FR trim upwards. The 1.0 TSI DSG-auto 110PS can be paired with all trim levels, while a sportier 1.5 TSI DSG-auto 150PS is available exclusively with FR and FR Sport trims.
The facelift sees a number of new design features.
Subtle exterior refinements complement the model’s rugged appearance, as the car receives three new alloy wheel designs (two 17-inch and one 18-inch), ECO LED exterior lighting as standard, a stylish, two-tone chrome SEAT logo with the Arona model name in embossed, handwritten lettering, a new grille patterning, a Reflex Silver bumper, foglight design changes, and a new spoiler and diffuser.
There are also a number of new additions to the Arona colour palette, including three new body colours – Sapphire Blue, Asphalt Blue, and Dark Camouflage – and three roof colour options – Midnight Black, Magnetic Tech and new Candy White.
Reflecting the exterior enhancements, the interiors have been updated with the Arona featuring SEAT’s renowned Beats audio system as an option, and a 9.2-inch Navigation screen available on SE Technology trim and above (SE trim comprises an 8.25-inch Touchscreen display).
Additionally, a high resolution Digital Cockpit features in the Arona on FR Sport and XPERIENCE Lux.
To further create atmosphere within the cabin, the newly designed air vents have surround LED lighting, available in a range of colours depending on the trim selected – Daring Red for FR/FR Sport and Aran Green for XPERIENCE/XPERIENCE Lux.

What to watch out for
Extremely trivial complaint of plastic covers of locking wheel nuts of 3,000 miles SEAT Arona falling off: Also raised on https://www.aronaforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=229
27-03-2018:Dan Powell's long-term test Arona suffered "stuttering and bumpy get-aways in 1st gear": /our-cars/seat-arona/hopping-mad-with-the-arona/ (See carbycar entries for Volkswagewn T-Roc with same engine).
01-06-2018:Potential purchaser of SEAT Arona 1.5 TSI told that SEAT has stopped fitting this engine. May be problems over EU6d TEMP / WLTP. May be the same problem that afflicted an Ibiza with the 1.5 TSI engine.
28-08-2018:Report that a service action to "reduce the risk" of the centre rear seatbelt buckle flying open does not work, so car cannot be used to carry five people safely. (see Recalls 11-5-2018). Same issue has occurred with the 2018 Volkswageb Polo on the same floorpan. Currently no fix available so cars are effectively 4 seaters.
07-10-2018:Report of owner of January 2018 SEAT Arona notified of the fault with the rear seat belt anchor and that the car needed to be recalled. He took it for the recall, but was then told that the work was temporary and a further recall would be necessary. In the meantime the middle rear seat should not be used and a notice to that effect was sent to be stuck to the dashboard as a reminder. The final recall has not yet been notified so that is nine months with the middle rear seat being unusable.
15-03-2019:Report of squeaking driveshaft gaiter on January 2018 SEAT Arona FR 1 ltr 115psi at 6,250 miles. When turning left hand full lock there is a squeaking noise from front nearside. Dealer said it was the driveshaft gaiter.
25-05-2019:Report of injector failure in 1 month old 2019 SEAT Arona 1.0TSI 115.
04-07-2019:Report of clutch failure in new SEAT Aronal at 1,700 miles. Clutch replaced at cost of £1,122, but still a smell of burning clutch. Dealer who replaced it ha failed to fit a clip. Smell continued and 2nd clutch failed at 5,000 miles.
24-08-2019:Regarding problems with 1.5TSI engines, owner of Tiguan 1.5TSI wrote, "if you turn off the auto hold and the stop start you will not get the kangarooing or the car switching on and off if you coast the last few yards to a stop with the clutch depressed."
03-09-2019:Report of faulkt with infotainment system of new SEAT Arona at Week 2 of ownership. First attempt from dealer to fix - within 30 days - did not work. Second attempt at Week 5 of ownership didn't work either. Car going back in for 3rd time - Week 8 of ownership - to have another part replaced. It's a temperature related issue. Outside temp is above 21.5c and the infotainment system goes black and keeps rebooting. Owner concerned that 3rd fix won't work, but won't be able to tell until the next warm day, which might be weeks away.
