BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Review 2024
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe At A Glance
On average it achieves 0% of the official MPG figure
Ignore the badge: the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is basically a BMW 1 Series with an awkward rear end. It's meant to look more stylish and exclusive than the common-or-garden hatch, while rivals include the Mercedes CLA Coupe and, er... maybe the Audi A3 saloon. But mainly the CLA.
It's not a car that needs to exist, if we're honest. But if you need more space than the two-door BMW 2 Series Coupe offers and don't want a BMW 1 Series (or even a BMW X1), the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe could be the car for you. As we'll explain in our BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe review.
Let's start with the interior, because we like that a lot more than the exterior. It's very upmarket, with plush finishes and a brilliant infotainment system (especially on higher-spec models with the bigger display).
There are more buttons than an old Blackberry smartphone, but that's good for user-friendliness. We particularly like the rotary iDrive controller which allows you to easily dart around the navigation system - it's a shame this is now being dropped from newer BMWs.
While the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is one of the smaller models in the line-up, it's relatively spacious inside. Passengers in the rear will be able to get comfortable quite easily, although we wouldn't want to sit in the middle seat for any length of time.
Access to the boot is quite tight, which is frustrating as it can actually accommodate quite a lot of food shopping (or luggage for a weekend away).
There are two core models available: Sport and M Sport, as well as the range-topping BMW M235i Gran Coupe. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe M Sport is by far the biggest seller - and we see why. As well as the aforementioned bigger infotainment display, it also adds digital dials, 18-inch alloy wheels, M Sport suspension and M Sport exterior styling.
There's a range of petrol and diesel engines available, as well as a choice of manual or dual-clutch automatic transmissions. With diesel being so out of favour, we'd recommend the BMW 220i as the ideal all-rounder.
Its 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine takes a lot of the strain out of day-to-day driving compared to the smaller, three-cylinder 218i. The 220i comes exclusively with an automatic gearbox, too, which is good because BMW's manual transmissions deserve to be left in the past.
Unlike the BMW 2 Series Coupe, most Gran Coupe models are front-wheel drive. That'll suit the majority of buyers. It's easy and fun to drive in a typical BMW way. For added excitement, the BMW M235i Gran Coupe takes on the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 with a powerful 306PS 2.0-litre petrol engine and xDrive all-wheel drive as standard.
Prices for the regular BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe start from a little over £30,000 which, in the current market, isn't that unreasonable for a left-field BMW. It won't cost a lot to run, either, although you can't get it with any kind of hybrid or plug-in power.
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe handling and engines
- Engines range from 218i Automatic to M235i xDrive
- Readers report Real MPG to be between 26–46 mpg
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 2024: Handling and ride quality
If you've had a test drive in the latest BMW 2 Series, you might be a little disappointed by the 2 Series Gran Coupe. That's because, despite its name, it's actually more like a 1 Series underneath. It's based on the same front-wheel-drive platform as the 1 Series, meaning it's not quite as darty and agile as the two-door model.
It still handles very well, though, with the body remaining flat during cornering (great for both confidence and motion sickness), while the steering feels more engaging than a Mercedes CLA's.
Its relatively compact dimensions (compared to a BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, for example) mean it's easy to place on the road, while it's set up to be slightly softer and more comfortable than the 2 Series Coupe.
The BMW M235i Gran Coupe is a slightly different proposition. With its bespoke steering, adaptive suspension and xDrive all-wheel drive, it'll make light work of a bumpy British B-road.
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 2024: Engines
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe engine line-up is broadly the same as you'll find in the BMW 1 Series.
The entry-level petrol is a peppy (but not thrilling) 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine. Badged the BMW 218i Gran Coupe, this will officially accelerate from 0-62mph in 9.1 seconds with the dual-clutch automatic gearbox, or 9.2 seconds with the manual transmission.
It's fine if you're on a budget, but we reckon this engine works better in a MINI than it does in a relatively heavy four-door coupe.
The BMW 220i Gran Coupe requires less effort to get a shift on. Its 2.0-litre petrol engine produces 178PS and is available exclusively with a DTC automatic gearbox. 0-62mph acceleration drops to a sprightlier 7.1 seconds, which gives a welcome amount of extra urgency for overtaking or building speed on motorway slip roads.
If it's drama you're looking for, you'll need the BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe. With 306PS from its 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the M-badged 2 Series Gran Coupe will accelerate to 62mph in just 4.9 seconds - that's almost as quick as a Volkswagen Golf R.
For drivers who cover a lot of miles, both the BMW 218d and 220d use a 2.0-litre diesel engine, producing 150PS and 190PS respectively.
The 218d will accelerate to 62mph in 8.6 seconds, while the 220d is about a second quicker. Due to the nature of diesel engines, with a big slug of torque from low revs, they'll feel perkier than the entry-level petrol models.
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 2024: Safety
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has been awarded five stars by independent safety experts, Euro NCAP. That includes a 94 per cent score for adult occupants, 87 per cent for children, 76 per cent for pedestrians and 72 per cent for its safety assist features.
If you're looking for the full suite of driver-assistance tech, you'll need a BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe with the optional Driving Assistance feature.
This monitors your surroundings and can apply the brakes to prevent a collision. It also features a lane departure warning system, while the lane change warning can warn you of vehicles in your blind spot when changing lanes on the motorway.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 2024: Practicality
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe measures 4526mm long, 1800mm wide (2081mm including door mirrors) and 1420mm in height.
For one of the smaller cars in BMW's range, it feels pretty spacious inside. There's plenty of room up front, while you can fit a pair of adults in the back - they might be brushing their heads on the sloping roofline, though, particularly if they're more than six feet tall.
The boot has more luggage space than the BMW 1 Series on paper, although it's not as useable in the real world. It can officially carry up to 430 litres, although it's hampered by the tight saloon-like opening. It's quite deep, at least, while the rear seats drop 40/20/40 to provide more space when required.
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 2024: Quality and finish
We can't really fault the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe for interior quality. It feels a step above competitors inside - helped by soft-touch materials, premium fabrics and shiny metal surfaces.
It helps that there isn't an extensive range of trim levels and even the most affordable BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is well equipped, with sports seats finished in part (faux) leather. If we had to nitpick, you'll pay quite a lot for full leather, while electric front seats and adjustable lumbar support are also extra.
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 2024: Infotainment
In a world of large touchscreen displays, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe looks rather old fashioned inside. It's incredibly user-friendly, though, and after a week with the 2 Series Gran Coupe, we felt quite reluctant to swap it for a car with a more minimalist layout.
Tech fans should look for an M Sport (or M235i) model, if only for the larger 10.25-inch central touchscreen and digital dash. The entry-level Sport trim comes with a smaller 8.8-inch display and conventional analogue dials.
The main infotainment display is quick to respond and easy to navigate, helped by the rotary controller between the front seats.
We wish more manufacturers would introduce these - not only are they more convenient (and less distracting) than having to lean forward and touch the screen, they also reduce annoying fingerprints on the display You get handy shortcut buttons, too, as well as a bank of climate control buttons and even a physical volume control. Excellent.
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe value for money
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 2024: Prices
With prices starting from a little over £30,000, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe actually represents pretty good value for money. It's only slightly more expensive than the equivalent 1 Series, while it undercuts the regular BMW 2 Series Coupe. It's more affordable than a Mercedes CLA, too, although a Kia ProCeed will be a better choice for the budget conscious.
Even the BMW M235i Gran Coupe isn't outrageously expensive - you'll pay around £43,500 for the range-topper, which is slightly cheaper than a Volkswagen Golf R and around £1500 less than a Mercedes-AMG CLA 35.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is old enough now that early models are now coming out of finance and lease deals, so you can get a good deal on a used example.
We've seen three-year-old 218i Sport Gran Coupes being sold at a main dealer for as little as £22,000. A secondhand BMW M235i Gran Coupe can be yours from around £28,000.
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 2024: Running Costs
You might associate the BMW badge with high running costs, but the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe needn't break the bank in that regard.
The diesels are - unsurprisingly - the most frugal, capable of up to 62.8mpg (according to official WLTP fuel economy tests). That's with the manual gearbox; this figure drops to a still very reasonable 58.9mpg with the auto transmission.
Most drivers will be better with one of the petrol models, though. The BMW 218i Gran Coupe manages up to 49.6mpg, while the 220i returns up to 47.1mpg. The BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe is officially good for up to 39.8mpg.
You can't buy the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe with electric or hybrid power, so you'll pay a flat rate of £180 a year in tax (after the first year). Be careful, though - models with a list price of more than £40,000 when new will be stung by an extra £390/year in premium car tax for five years (from the second time the car's taxed).

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe revealed
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is on sale now with prices starting from £25,815.
Based on the BMW 2 Series, the new Gran Coupe features an exclusive exterior design details including contoured kidney grille bars, a mesh grille for the flagship BMW M235i xDrive M Performance model an all-new design of the rear lights, which extend towards the centre of the rear.
BMW says the standout characteristic of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is its silhouette which, like the frameless side windows for the four doors, is lifted from the classical coupe blueprint. The 2 Series Gran Coupe is 4526mm long and 1800mm wide, but stands just 1420mm tall. Despite its low-slung appearance, passengers are well catered for thanks to the 2670mm wheelbase and there are various ways to expand the 430-litre load compartment.
The slightly angled headlights draw attention to the familiar BMW kidney grille. As on BMW coupes from higher up the range, the one-piece kidney grille adopts a sleek design which extends almost the full width between the headlights. The kidney bars are contoured with an eye‑catching vertical indentation, providing a three-dimensional effect on M Sport models with Aluminium satinated finish.
In contrast, an exclusive visual identifier of the line-up’s sporting flagship – the BMW M235i xDrive M Performance – is its striking grille design featuring pronounced three-dimensional mesh with a Cerium grey finish in place of the classical bars. The outer air intakes are also larger on the M235i xDrive and once again feature the Cerium grey finish.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is equipped as standard with full-LED headlights that can also be specified as an option in adaptive form. The rear lights also feature full-LED as standard. Also at the rear of the car are the 90mm dual chrome exhaust tailpipes (single on the 218i models), while the BMW M235i xDrive features free-form design tailpipe trims.
The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will be available from launch with a choice of three engines – one diesel and two petrol.
A revised 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine will power the entry level BMW 218i, with CO2 emissions reduced by 29g/km over the previous engine. Maximum power has been boosted by 4PS to 140PS. Peak torque is 220Nm while an overboost function will briefly generate an extra 10Nm in fourth gear or higher. The BMW 218i covers 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds and will reach a top speed of 134mph. Official fuel economy is 49.6-56.5mpg with CO2 emissions of 114-131g/km.
The 2.0-litre unit under the bonnet of the M235i xDrive is the BMW Group’s most powerful four-cylinder engine, delivering a maximum output of 306PS. Peak torque is 450Nm, which helps it reach 62mph in 4.9 seconds, while top speed is limited to 155mph. The M235i returns 39.8-42.2mpg with CO2 emissions of 153-162g/km.
The diesel offering comes in the form of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder BMW 220d, which generates a maximum power output of 190PS with peak torque of 400Nm. The sprint from zero to 62mph takes 7.5 seconds on the way to a top speed of 146mph. The BMW 220d returns 62.8-67.3mpg and emits 110-119g/km of CO2.
Improvements have been made to the shift comfort and acoustic properties of the eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission fitted in the BMW 220d and in the BMW M235i xDrive. Swift automatic gear changes ensure the car is driving in the highest possible gear, even when travelling at low speeds. The driver can also change gear manually using the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

The entry level Sport model will be fitted with 17-inch light-alloy wheels while the M-Sport and BMW M235i xDrive M Performance models will run on polished 18-inch light-alloy wheels. The 19-inch rims will be available as an option for both the M Sport and M235i models.
A large panoramic roof with a glass area of 0.7 square metres is also optional. The opening in the headliner has an electrically operated roller blind to provide shading, while a net wind deflector and a comfort position for the glass roof panel keeps wind noise to a minimum when the roof is open.
Thanks to the car’s front-wheel-drive architecture with transverse-mounted engines and a lower centre tunnel, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe offers generous levels of cabin space. Rear passengers get 33mm of extra knee room over the BMW 2 Series Coupe, while the seating position is 12mm higher with 14mm more headroom when the optional panoramic roof is specified. The 430-litre boot (40 litres more than the two-door coupe) can be expanded further by folding down the 40/20/40 split rear seat backrest, while the rear bench can be released fully from the load compartment.
The interior offers an array of ambient lighting which highlights the car’s quality, including trim strips on the instrument panel and door panels that retain their normal appearance in daylight, but function as decorative lighting elements in the dark. On M Sport and M235i models with Extended Lighting as standard, there are six lighting colours to choose from and the brightness can be adjusted. The lighting is activated when the vehicle is unlocked and the desired colour and selected brightness level are stored in the personalised key.

This features elements drivers are already accustomed to, such as Remote Services, Real Time Traffic Information, and adds Concierge Services and Apple CarPlay Preparation.
Apple CarPlay Preparation will be standard on all new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe models. This service will be included for one year from build, and then renewable via the BMW ConnectedDrive portal thereafter, with one year, three year or lifetime subscriptions available.
The BMW Live Cockpit Professional is standard on M Sport and M235i models. This includes a fully digital, customisable instrument display behind the steering wheel with a screen size of 10.25 inches, coupled with a 10.25-inch Central Information Display.

The engine can be started as soon as the phone has been placed in the smartphone tray or wireless charging tray. Accessible via BMW Connected once the owner’s identity has been checked, the Digital Key offers unrivalled flexibility, as the driver can share keys with up to five other people. The BMW Digital Key is available for top-of-the-range NFC-capable Samsung Galaxy smartphones running Android 8.0 and above. Alternatively, the BMW Key Card can be used, which also features NFC technology.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant first seen in the BMW 3 Series is also available on the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, as part of BMW Live Cockpit Professional offering.
The intelligent, digital character responds to the prompt “Hey BMW” and learns the driver’s routines and habits in order to apply them in the appropriate context. The system helps the driver, learns their preferences and is familiar with their favoured settings – e.g. for the seat heating or the places they drive to frequently using the navigation system (“Take me home”).
One unique feature is that drivers can give the Intelligent Personal Assistant a name to create even greater individuality and personality. Not only does the Intelligent Personal Assistant await the driver’s every command, it is always there to assist them and even provide casual conversation. Saying “Hey BMW, I’m cold” will prompt the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to adjust the temperature inside the car accordingly.
The arrival of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant ensures there is always a genuine BMW professional on board. The Personal Assistant is able to explain all sorts of different functions (“How does the High Beam Assistant work?”), provide current status information (“Is the oil level okay?”) and help answer questions (“What messages do I have?”).
Drivers can allow access to their calendar and contacts, which will enable the assistant to find parking spaces at the destination, provide information on traffic jams along the route, find the nearest fuel station and remind the driver when they need to set off.
The range of available functions and skills is constantly expanding thanks to regular updates, which can be carried out over the air or via a smartphone and in-car with the help of the new Remote Software Upgrade facility.
The standard BMW Stereo sound system offers six speakers and 100-watt amplifier, while a Harman Kardon surround sound system with 464 watts of audio power and 16 speakers is optionally available.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is on sale from 16 October with prices starting from £25,815. Deliveries are expected from early 2020.
