I am thinking of buying a used A class Mercedes between 2000 and 2004. Which in your opinion is the best and whether diesel or petrol?

Do not even go near one. Of all small cars they have the greatest potential to become extremely deep money pits. That said, the Mk II (current shape) A Class from 2005 is much better quality and relatively okay.
