Why is No Claims Bonus only valid on one vehicle at a time?

We've built up a NCB of over nine years with the same insurer on one car. Recently we acquired a second car and insured it with the same insurer, who in its advertising promises to link the policies and discount the second vehicle. However, they refused to allow a NCB discount on the basis that a NCB is only valid on one car. While I reluctantly accept that this appears to be industry standard practice, I find this unfair and unreasonable. I wonder if you can explain to me why this is the case.

I agree completely. Regardless of whether you have one car or five cars, your history is the same. NCB should apply across all policies in my opinion. If you have a claim on one policy, then you still need to notify your insurers on the other policies of this. Some insurers - including Admiral, Esure, Aviva and LV - often provide the full NCB to the second car, as well as the first, as far as I'm aware. I would get another quote looking for a better deal on the two cars.
