Is dual mass flywheel failure a common fault on Peugeot diesels like my 307 GLX?
I've recently noticed a metallic rattle on starting up my 2003 Peugeot 307 GLX 110 HDO with 68,500 miles. This was diagnosed as spring rattle on the flywheel so a new flywheel was fitted under warranty. Now the same thing is happening again, and I have been told that it will cost £700-800 to repair.
Is this a common fault on Peugeot diesels and on this particular engine? Also, a Peugeot engineer remarked that these springs were a "damn nuisance", so is it possible to remove them without replacing the complete flywheel?
As this fault has now occurred twice, I am considering - using The Sale of Goods Act legislation - contacting Peugeot for at least assistance with meeting the costs, as I believe that it is unreasonable for this to happen a second time to a car that has below average mileage. In 40 years of motoring I've never had to have a flywheel replaced.

In 40 years of motoring you never previously had a dual mass flywheel. This is a comparatively new innovation. And yes, failures are common. Some taxi drivers regard them as a routine failure, needing replacement every 40,000 to 50,000 miles. Some owners replace the DMFs with solid flywheel, which makes the drive harsher and can lead to earlier transmission failure.
