Why is the gear change in my Citroen Xsara Picasso getting stiffer?

I have a Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.6 HDI 54 reg with 10,600 miles. The gearchange is becoming increasingly stiff. There's no crunching or grinding, it just feels like the gear lever is moving in a thick glue. Any ideas?

Try replacing the gearbox oil with fully synthetic.
