Ford Fiesta gearbox crunch
I have been looking at a 2003 Ford Fiesta 1.4 for sale by a private seller. It has 59,000 miles and hasn't had anything go wrong with it, still has original timing belt etc. I took it for a test drive and when I shift into second gear it makes a crunching sound. All the other gears are fine. The owner said he heard it might be something to do with a bearing. If this is the case what would need done, and how much could it cost? I don't want to buy a car that will need expensive gearbox repairs immediately.

The synchromesh rings have given up. Repair involves removing then dismantling the gearbox so you're looking at a minimum £750.
