Difficult A-Class gearchange

Our parents have bought an A-Class Mercedes but mum is having trouble with engaging reverse gear. It's a 6-speed box with R in top left postion so the driver has to pull the stick up and push it away to engage. She doesn't have the strength or dexterity to do this. Can you suggest anything to help? They took your advice and didn't get an automatic when replacing their last car but are now thinking that's what they need to do.

I can't think of any modification that would make this easier for her. But swapping cars will be horribly expensive. They'll lose around £6,000.

Much better execution of original A-Class concept. Feels far higher quality, especially inside. Easy to park.
