Why is my car making a strange whirring noise?
I have a Toyota Yaris Verso automatic and it has started developing a strange whistling/squeaky noise. It's only really noticeable when I engage D but often in P mode and when starting up you can also hear it faintly. I've scoured forums and thought it could be something to do with the A/C compressor or serpentine belt but the bizarre thing is as soon as i turn on the A/C the noise goes.

I think you have managed to isolate that the noise is coming from the electromechanical a/c compressor clutch when it is disconnected (a/c off). On a Yaris, this is a separate part. I've had them replaced when they failed completely. Probably cost about £200 at a UK a/c specialist. (A dealer will probably recommend an entire new compressor that costs as much as the car is worth.)
