I've had an accident and my insurance is registered to an old number plate - is it invalid?

I have a private number plate on my car. When I put this on I went online to my insurance company and thought I had changed the details. Unfortunately I have been involved in an accident, and the police have told me I have no insurance. I do have insurance but it is still on my old number plate. Can you tell me if I will be in trouble with the police?

Strictly speaking, on all the systems, yes, but with mitigating circumstances so when yo go to court your punishment should be less than the usual big fine and six points.
