My 1998 Volkswagen Golf convertible's hood is not working - help?
After being in storage for two years I am getting my son's 1998 Volkswagen Golf back on the road. The power hood worked perfectly before, but it has now decided not to work. It appears to be interlocked somehow as the switch on the dash will not operate the hood. I have checked for voltage and there is 12v on one of the terminals. I have also located the relay under the back seat, so I popped the cover off this and by making the contacts manually with my finger, I can open and close the roof electrically, proving that there is no problem with the motor or fuses etc. It just won't work from the dash switch. According to the manual, the ignition has to be turned on and then off but leaving the key in. I have tried all combinations of this, but still nothing. I don't think the handbrake is interlocked on this model but the handbrake light is working on the dash, so that's another thing eliminated, ive run out of ideas on this one, is there a way of bridging the dash switch so that it will work??

You need to acquire a wiring diagram or workshop manual for this. When you say you operated the relay manually and then the roof operated, I assume that you have power at the relay? If that's so, could not the relay be at fault?
