My Ford Mondeo consumes a lot of oil - why is this?

i have a Ford Mondeo estate 1.8 LX on an 02 plate with 112,000 miles. I am using about one litre of oil every 100 miles, but otherwise the car runs fine. Does anyone have any idea why this is?

Failed piston rings or catastrophically failed valve stem oil seals.
