Volkswagen won't cover my second EGR failure - what are my rights?

I have a 2009 Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI. The EGR has just failed for the sixth time and my local dealer has just quoted me over £1600 for the repair. The last time it failed was just over two years ago but Volkswagen picked up the cost. This time they refuse to make any contribution. I have owned the car since new and have a full Volkswagen service history. What rights do I have?

This is the 155th complaint received against the 2009-2012 Golf Mk VI. EGR failures are much more common on 1.6 TDIs than on 2.0 TDIs. Your repeated failures make me wonder how you have been running the car and what you have been running the car on (this may be why goodwill was turned down). However, you could argue that the engine in inherently dirty and that is why it has been clogging its EGRs so regularly. You could expect this in normal running after about 80,000 miles anyway.
