Comparison of 2 new estates - any known problems?
Looking two models (2016 Vauxhall Astra ST SRi 1.4 150 V 2016 Skoda Octavia Estate se 1.4 150) for 6K annual mileage with a high proportion of short journeys & plan to keep for 8 years+. Have read exhaustively all the tests & reviews, etc. Are there any known mechanical or other problems with either? Is either demonstrably more reliable? Are either of these cars tyres too low profile for comfort? Am thinking of using UK Car Discount or maybe Carwow to purchase. Before I road test, your comments, as ever, would be most welcome.

The is the newer EA211 belt cam engine in the Skoda, so it will need a fresh timing belt, tensioner and waterpump after 4 years for which you need to allow £500-£600. But it's lovely to drive. The Astra is chain cam so unless the tensioner or waterpump fails (and I've never heard of this) you save that expense. The Skoda feels the more solid car. The Astra has more sophisticated suspension and ultimately handles better.
