Why won't my phone connect to Bluetooth?

I have 2007 Ford Focus with a Sony infotainment system. However, for some reason, I am unable to pair my phone to its Bluetooth system. Any idea why?

If your phone is newer than the car it won't pair anyway because the car's system will not be able to recognise the phone. It may be possible to get an upgrade, but the Bluetooth on Focus of this age was a bit flakey. I had one.
